SA comedy awards 2007

So you’d think an event designed to award them for their achievements might cheer them up. Well it worked for the winners, who sincerely embraced the fledgling star-studded event, coming across like less stupidly-dressed Oscar recipients when collecting their shiny banana-peel shaped trophies. The comedy in-crowd audience loved the highly entertaining one hour ceremony, during which stylish and well-rehearsed presenters conveyed awards on many deserving fellow celebrities with funny bones.

Of course, there were lowlights. Are accents really THAT funny? I guess it’s too much to hope that the local comedy audience will ever attain the sophistication levels of four year olds.

The comics who didn't win? They just got drunk – this is another thing comedians are exceptionally good at – and complained about, a) being mistaken for other comedians, b) being ignored in favour of the more famous, c) being ignored in favour of the less famous, d) being ignored by the guys with the snack trays, e) Cape Town and the booze. And if that sounds like a lot of fun, actually it was. Jean Barker
