TopTV porn will corrupt our children

The question: To porn-channel or not to porn-channel, is one that elicits an emotionally laden response.

I, for one, am passionately opposed to porn in which ever form. And the mere thought of porn polluting our homes and corrupting our children sends me into a blind rage.

I have heard all the arguments in favour of TopTVs' proposed porn channels, and I am well informed of the reasons of those opposed to it.

And through everything that has been said, one issue gained prominence. One issue rose above all other: The emotional and spiritual well being of the children of South Africa.

Children with unsupervised or uncontrolled access to the internet is already a huge problem in society. A reality. Not only in our country, but across the globe. And, apart from gaining access to porn via the internet, it's a hard hitting fact that children - increasingly so at primary school level - have access to porn via the printed- and electronic media.

So, lets cut the bull: "Your child, Sir; your child, Madam, is being exposed to pornography."  Because even though some children, with responsible parents, do not have access to porn; the friends of, or the friends of the friends of those children, do.  That's another fact.  And porn on television - regardless which channel, or which broadcaster - will only aggravate the situation.

Porn is freely available. In adult magazines, adult DVD's and on the net.

South Africa should keep its airwaves clean. The majority of schoolchildren do not go to bed at eight anymore. Times have changed. Ten is the new eight.  And children nowadays are tech savvy. So, if you want to indulge in something morally reprehensible, then it's your prerogative to do so. But do not force decent society into a position where the well being of their homes and, most importantly, the well being of their children, is compromised.

Children will be children. They are curious creatures by their very nature. We should do everything in our power to protect them from all forms of harm.  And making it just that more difficult for them to gain access to that type of filth, is our responsibility.
