Cindy Nell talks fashion, Hannah Montana and JubJub
12/03/2010 15:12
Meet Cindy: Beauty queen, promoter, exceptionally tanned wife and Hannah Montana fan.
* GALLERY: Cindy models her Hannah Montana T-Shirt at Melrose Arch
SA's hardest working former beauty queen is back in the saddle after not lasting too long on Survivor Santa Carolina. Cindy Nell has been named the local judge for the Disney Channel's Hannah Montana Style Competition. We chatted to Cindy about her latest projects, married life and of course, fellow Survivor SA contestant and now murder accused JubJub. There's something for everyone, folks!
Cindy had the opportunity to be a tween again when she designed her own Hannah Montana T-Shirt to launch the competition. She looks so good in it, it's so unfair. Once a beauty queen, always a beauty. Would you believe this 20-something woman has the heart of a little girl? "I combined my style and Hannah's style which is a little bit fun and stylish, just kind of young and fresh" she said of her personal design. Ag sweet.
Cindy's also young and fresh in love. After a year of marriage, Cindy still gushes "I'm loving it! I really am. Life is absolutely fantastic at the moment. The best thing is, I suppose, I have such a great husband." Things are so good between them that she couldn't stand being away from him so often due to her Pasella schedule, and that's why she left the show last year.

She hasn't left TV, though. Cindy survived a whole two episodes on the current season of Survivor SA: Santa Carolina celebrity edition, but was voted out because she was just too damn good at everything. Plus, she was too nice. Cindy elaborates on her charitable nature: "On the night that you have to go for eviction, you have to take all your things with you. Although none of us expected to be voted out, we all had to be ready for it. So before I left, I said to the girls, in case I get voted out, do you want me to leave some of my clothes behind. And they said yes so we all left something behind. I left all my swimsuits behind and all my clothes besides for what I was wearing. So subsequently Sandi and Ashley each wore one of my bikinis for the duration that they were on. And I don't think anyone noticed. " Maybe sharing is caring, but this could be taking it a bit too far.
Cindy also shared a tribe with rapper JubJub, who this week was charged with murder after his deadly street dice allegedly killed four school children. Cindy was cleverly reluctant to comment, saying "Sjoe... if I had to be honest, JubJub is quite something, and it definitely came across." Very cryptic indeed, but that opening "Sjoe" tells us there's something she's not telling us.
Not everything is as cryptic with this beautiful businesswoman, though. She's super excited about her new job as co-host with Elana Afrika on Woza Lunchtime, Supersport's new FIFA World Cup lifestyle programme. She explains that, " It's like the Top Billing of the World Cup. Behind the scenes, interviewing the famous soccer wives, going to all the events, going to some games, and all the glitz and glam of the soccer. So yes I will be staying in TV, I love it."
And we love you, Cindy, for being such a trooper. Cindy was spotted partying up a storm with Channel24 editor Jean Barker at Oppikoppi last year.

So who's her favourite band or musician? "International will obviously be Miley Cyrus at the moment and local will probably be the Parlotones." Sticking with Miley because she's employing Cindy at the moment? I couldn't say, I love Miley too.
It's nice to talk to a celebrity who's so good and well-versed at giving interviews. Cindy always says the right thing at the right time with the right amount of enthusiasm. This chick's a machine!
* Cindy Nell will lead the judging panel for Disney's Hannah Montana Style Competition. Design your own Hannah Montana T-Shirt here and enter to win a trip to Hollywood.

Die Antwoord performed in the US... or did they?
11/03/2010 15:55
Die Antwoord is always preceded by a deep question.
This site reckons Die Antwoord performed their first 'secret' US concert on Tuesday night. The supposed gig went down at Cinespace in Hollywood.
While the pictures of Ninja are indisputable, and he was indeed rapping while he was there, it doesn't seem like there was much of a gig at all due to the following observations:
A) Yo-landi Vi$$er is MIA; nowhere to be seen. We know she went with Ninja and DJ Hi-Tek to the US, so it's not like she's sitting pretty on the Flats waiting for her man to come home.
B) The video shows Ninja rapping the lyrics to his track "Beat Boy" over some new, weird beats from two DJs he's never met. Also, they're not exactly performing on a 'stage' - it's a box.
Check it. Watch him ask the DJs for their name and look very confused at the answer.
C) For a band that's intent on taking over the interwebs, there are surprisingly few results when you google this 'secret' gig at Cinespace.
This sounds more like an Oppikoppi/Wedding DJs scenario, where Ninja decided, on a whim, to co-lab with the DJs during their set. Because you've got to "Sail Away, MotherF*&#kers, Sail Away!". That's just how Ninja rolls - give him a mic and he'll kill it for you.
What do you think of this odd situation? Are Die Antwoord taking underground even more underground? Did Yo-landi and Ninja have an argument because she wanted to renew their vows in a Vegas chapel and he didn't? Or are these Americans just too dumb to separate the man from his machine?

RIP Corey Haim
11/03/2010 11:58
80s teen heartbreaker Corey Haim has died of an apparent prescription drug overdose at age 38.
That's Hollywood's standard reason for most celebrity deaths these days.
You'll probably remember Corey most as Sam from the 1987 teen-cult vampire flick, The Lost Boys. Check out this clip from the movie for a refresher.
Another 80s teen star, Corey Feldman, also appeared in this movie, and this was the start of their friendship and working relationship. They were known as "The Two Coreys" and starred in many movies together. They were the ultimate teen heartthrob tag-team. They even got a reality TV show in 2007 called, you guessed it, "The Two Coreys". Not a bad comeback for 80s kid actors.

After a very busy career as a child, Corey tried, somewhat unsuccessfully, to break into the market again in 2000. His lost years had been due to a stint in rehab and his prescription meds addiction also led to a fallout with Feldman and ultimately the end of their reality show in 2008. Feldman had this to say about the death of his colleague:
"This is a tragic loss of a wonderful, beautiful, tormented soul, who will always be my brother, family, and best friend". Ag foeitog.
Haim's adult career was mostly comprised of bit-parts, cameos and straight-to-video or DVD flicks. Here he is with Jason Statham in the craptastic Crank: High Voltage in 2009.

It is rather sad that so many Hollywood high-riders and has-beens are dying so young. Maybe they should up the age restriction on prescription meds to 50.
What's your favourite Corey Haim performance?

Kelly Clarkson arrives in SA

hoto credit: Heat / Oupa Bopape
US pop star and the first (and probably most successful) American Idol has touched down for her upcoming tour of South Africa.
heat magazine managed to catch her at the airport despite her details being kept top secret by management. That's the way, you paps!
Kelly arrived just after 10 am this morning sporting a really, really casual look and a new red dye job. We're not sure how we feel about it, but hey, we're just glad she's here!
Check out www.heat.co.za for more pics and video of Kelly's arrival.
It seems she didn't have any problems getting into the country. Her passport is probably not that full, hey Lance?
Even when the bodyguards tried to stop the heat staff from taking photos, Kelly was uber fan-friendly and obliged. Aaw, that's just how we like our schlebs!
Kelly Clarkson's SA leg of her All I Ever Wanted Tour kicks off in Johannesburg at the Coca-Cola Dome on Friday 12 March, Sunday 14 March at the ICC in Durban and on Wed 17 March at the Grand Arena, Grand West in Cape Town.

The FHM Models 2010 winner is...
10/03/2010 10:55
photo credit: FHM / Aubrey Jonsson
After 12.8 million votes the public has chosen Charné Jade Slee as their favourite!
The 22-year-old beauty says that she was literally almost speechless when FHM editor Hagen Engler called her to share the good news. “I told Hagen I would scream if I could, but had no voice on the day due to campaign parties and lack of sleep. I was astonished and the sense of relief after all the hard work that so many people invested in me brought me to tears.”
Hagen reckons she deserves the title fair and square, saying “Charné is gorgeous and sincere, but she also put in the hard work it takes to win FHM Models 2010. She showed self-belief and she got out there, organising events and promoting herself online and in the real world to encourage people to vote for her. Her results show that she succeeded. She’s got the looks, dedication and ambition it takes to be a star. And now she’ll be featuring in the May issue of FHM.”
If you voted for Charné and you're hoping she'll reward you with a date, sorry mate. Charné is in a very happy relationship with SA musician Jacques Terre’Blanche. “We’ve been together for three and a half years. We met when I still lived in Cape Town as a student."
Although she lives in Gauteng, Charné says that the region is not the only one boasting with the hottest girls in the country. “I think SA on the whole has the hottest girls. I grew up in Natal, studied in Cape Town and I’ve lived in Joburg for 3 years. I think I have a good view on what we have to offer and I’m always impressed.”
Charné's prize includes a sexy photo shoot to be featured in the May issue of FHM as well as some cash, which she's using to pay off a loan. “I won’t however tell you what my loan was for,” she laughs. Anything to do with that well-filled bikini, Charné?
While campaigning, Charné promised that if she won, she would paraglide off any high point of FHM’s choosing with a big FHM flag behind her. And she’ll do it in her underwear! We wonder if the magazine is going to hold her to her promise.
Want to see who Charné's competition was? Here's a gallery of the Top 10.

Famous 'n Dangerous Behind the Wheel
09/03/2010 12:56
South African stars seems to be making a habit of driving drunk and dangerously. Let's take a look at the rap sheet.
Molemo Maarohanye, also known as rapper JubJub, may have been able to walk out of Survivor, but he won't be able to leave this island of shame. He and a friend have been arrested on charges of culpable homicide after they engaged in a 'deadly dice' with their cars and killed four youths. Read the full News24 report here.
JubJub is just the latest in a too long list of South African 'celebrities' who make a habit of driving dangerously, whether they're overindulging in drugs or speed (velocity, not ephedrine).
Mdududzi Tshabalala – Mandoza
In 2008 Mandoza was involved in a car crash where his Chrysler Crossfire collided with a VW Jetta. The driver and passenger in the Jetta died at the scene while Mandoza sustained minor injuries. A case of culpable homicide was being investigated at the time, however Mandoza was not prosecuted.
In February this year Mandoza was involved in another car accident, also a Mini Cooper, but it's yet to be determined whether he was in fact the driver. Luckily no one was hurt in this incident.
At this rate, Mandoza needs to get a slower car and a really good lawyer – just in case.
Sibusiso Leope - DJ Sbu
DJ 'Speedy' was caught in 2007 driving his Audi TT at 257 km/h in a 120 zone. He was fined a whole R7000. I'm sure that made a real dent in his wallet... Justice did however hit him where it hurts when Audi reclaimed his sponsored roadster.
He too just can't seem to stay out of trouble. In March last year it was reported that Sbu crashed his girlfriend Terry Pheto's car in Johannesburg, and then fled the scene nogal! Three ADT security guards were injured in the accident.
The sad thing is that this just gets their names in the news and benefits their careers.
Thato Sikwane - DJ Fresh
5fm's Afternoon Drive (fancy that) jock pleaded guilty to reckless driving in August last year for driving 161 km/h in a 120 zone. He famously tweeted all the happenings from the court case and came out wearing a T-shirt proclaiming his guilt. He was fined R5000.
Bryce Moon
The Bafana Bafana defender was arrested in June last year after his car collided with a pedestrian, Mavis Ncube, who later died in hospital due to the head injuries she had sustained. Moon claims that although he did have two beers before getting behind the wheel, he was not drunk. Okay then, big boy.
Steven Pienaar
These soccer stars sure do think they're invincible. Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar was arrested by Liverpool police on 23 February this year after failing to comply with traffic signals. This was mere hours after Everton's victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. He was charged with drunk driving but it's suspected that this run-in with the law will not influence his chances of playing for Bafana in the FIFA World Cup in June.
The list is probably much longer, but not everything makes the papers. Let's hope this 'trend' becomes unfashionable very fast and stars stop wearing their egos on their speedometers. Do you know of any heavy-footed celebs we haven't mentioned? Tell us!
