ABOUT THE VIDEO

Music videos are probably the most important way bands market their albums. They're giant, arty adverts. Which means they're also expensive, and that every second of the final video product takes hours of shooting, and weeks of planning.

So they're not traditionally made by websites, who're better known for short clips of cats going to the toilet, or wobbly live music videos shot by some drunk dude with a cellphone camera.

But our professionally shot music video for Koos Kombuis' politically charged new single, "Reconciliation Day" is different. This is broadcast quality stuff.

The song mourns the death of celebrated musician Taliep Petersen, and the failure of the new South Africa to deliver a better life for all. It's taken from Koos's controversial album, Bloedrivier, the original acoustic version of which was recorded by Channel24 in Koos' lounge, back in 2007.

The video was filmed in a school hall and shows Koos singing "Reconciliation Day", while the party on the dance floor below descends into chaos and violence.

"A production of this size – two days, multi-camera, dozens of extras, post-production – would usually cost tens of thousands of rands. The resources required are fairly staggering," says the video's director, filmmaker Richard Finn Gregory.

So did Channel24 throw money at the problem?
"What money? You don't need much money to make a music video when you have the right friends," says Channel24 editor Jean Barker.

Instead of splashing the cash, Koos put a call out on his 24.com blog, asking his fans to be extras in the video. Replies came in from dance students, school kids, professionals and artists. Channel24.co.za partnered with sister-paper Die Burger's multimedia department to get it done at minimum costs. Friends of Channel24 pitched in, among them musicians Anton Marshall, Anthony Theunissen and Gerrit Aalbers, make-up artist Lily Bloom and wardrobe pro Cathi Trevor. Professional actors gave up two Saturdays to work free of charge. Even extra lighting equipment was donated, by Kinetic.

"In the end, there were over 60 people involved - most of them doing it purely for love - and, okay, a free signed Koos Kombuis CD," Jean Barker says.

The video is currently exclusive to the web.

ag asseblief tog..... Sing die selfde blerrie ding oor en oor: "Reconciliation Day, Reconciliation Day..." give me a break, dis ontsettend eentonig.

En die miming lyk freaking weird, I'm sorry to say.
Marc 8/21/2008 8:57 AM
Holy Moly Man! Hey Francois thanks so much for responding! I was under the impression via Jean's comments that you knew that they would get someone to mime your words! I think it is an outrage that they have not apologised to you & have now made it seem via Jean's mail that "he was informed in other words" you knew about the miming! Jean, I think you should get your facts together before you respond the way you did, as it lead me to believe (and I am sure others) that this dispute was a pointless matter yet it is an huge issue and no one from 24 has had the decency to correct the mistake! I don’t want to carry on whining about this but I do believe that people make mistakes but RESPECT to the ones that admit to it & apologise! I can not believe that Francois Blom himself had to respond to this to correct the mistake Jean!

continued Surely, the concept of an artist wanting to 'own' their identity/voice and to not wanting it misrepresented in any way can't be that difficult to grasp. Music videos should not be taken too seriously? Hmm, maybe not by journalists. But for the musicians? It's an important, integral part of what we do for a living!!
Francois Breytenbach Blom 8/21/2008 6:24 AM
Informed "in other words" Yes I was informed that there would be a videoshoot, the date, the time, the place. I was ready and looking forward to it. No I was not informed/contacted at all regarding the decision to 'make a plan' and use someone else to sync to my vocals after I could'nt make it to the shoot. Though disappointed and angry at the sudden Murphy's-law-ish illness that pinned me down, ON THE DAY, I don't have a problem with not featuring in the video and certainly don't expect to be 'added in' now. On the day of the shoot I resigned myself to the fact that I would'nt appear. What I do however have a problem with is the decision that was made to put a face to my vocal parts. Ask any vocalist, ask Koos himself. No-one would be happy to accept a stand-in to sync their vox in a video. I'm astounded that this was even considered, let alone the fact that the decision to do this made it to final cut. Surely, the concept of an artist wanting to 'own' their identity/voice and to not wanting i

Marc 8/20/2008 6:09 PM
Thanks Jean Thanks for answering my question. So if Francois was aware that you were going to get somone to mime his vocals, then what is the problem here? That means he gave you his concent, right? I was under the impression, via reading all of these comments, that he had no idea about this? I am now at a loss for words! If that is the case then why is everyone so upset about this? It makes no sense to me!
Jean Barker 8/20/2008 1:49 PM
Francois was informed Hi Marc. All music videos are "mimed" or lip synched, just fyi. The sound is recorded in studio. Francois was contacted, and in fact was meant to be at the shoot to play himself. He cancelled an hour before the shoot, due to illness. With 60-odd people in costume, a venue set up, hired equipment and a to-the-second storyboard taped to the walls, we told him we would make a plan - which we did. He was informed in other words. As were the other 20-odd people who play on the track - they were welcome to appear in the video and couldn't make it, so are also represented by the three musicians shown in the video. In my opinion, Music videos shouldn't be taken too literally. They're there to illustrate songs, and help get the music and message out there. Thanks for your question and all the best.
Marc 8/20/2008 1:16 PM
Agree with Karen Agree - remove the miming & give Francois his due. Song is really good, especially Francois vocals! I would like to know whether Francois Blom was contacted about this. I think an apology is necessary - I wonder if this did occur. Can anyone confirm if this happened or not?
Linda Stalker-Millar 8/19/2008 1:51 PM
ethics agreed, if Francois couldn't possibly have been fitted in to the final edit, then it would have been better to just have had the vocals than a person miming...
Eben 8/18/2008 10:02 PM
Karen 8/18/2008 2:45 PM
Back at you Chris! Chris, I still dont think you are getting to the crux of the matter here! Most people understand why Francois is not featured in the video & dont get me wrong the video is great but what is dissapointing is the miming - was this really necessary? Are you saying that intelligent people like you guys could not come up with an alternative plan on the day of the shoot? Come on now??? Just admit your mistake & give Francois Blom the credit he deserves! Please dont get me worng the song is great & the video will also be great once you've edited out the mimng idiot!
Boosman666 8/18/2008 2:07 PM
Main of nie Main?
HS Coetzee 8/18/2008 1:57 PM
Hardcore.... Harde kern.... But why why why does Francois Blom not appear in the video? His voice is just a tad to familiar to have it mimed....really....
raaskop 8/18/2008 1:12 PM
main song dit bly 'n fkn main song, Frans dink sekerlik ook so, whats the problem - die regte isssue is ek rook nie, ek vloek nie, ek drink nie, oh shit ek het my pyp in die bar vergeet...
Brunhilde 8/18/2008 12:38 PM
ZERO SCRUPLES Who would have expected Koos to abide by a code of ethics in any event? It's all about his own gain, with the pretense that he cares about the country!
Theresa 8/18/2008 11:58 AM
Chris Was it you who decided to make Francois Breytenbach Blom look as if he has short hair?
Theresa 8/18/2008 11:39 AM
Putting words into the wrong man's mouth But it looks as if Anton Marshall is singing! There's just no respect.
Chris Roper 8/18/2008 11:24 AM
Yes Karen, I agree it's not ideal. But we had little choice. None of the band could turn up, and on the timeframe we had, we had to get all the members to have stand ins. Francois was the only one who could make it, which is why the video was shot with he and Koos as a major part of it. We were very disappointed when he couldn't make it, but had to carry on. Our call was - Koos needs the video.
Karen 8/18/2008 10:44 AM
Chris Rooper's remark Hey Chris, the fat that Francois vocals are mimed is the issue here, not the fact that Franscois was not there to shoot! NO MIMING is the name of the game & recognition for Francois vocals would also be great!
Yolanda Panda 8/18/2008 10:19 AM
Preferable! Ha!
Chris Roper 8/18/2008 10:01 AM
It is a pity We would have loved to have Francois in the video, but he unfortunately got sick on the day. Alas, we only had one day to make the video, and the 60 volunteers had already arrived, many of them having travelled from afar, and taken a day's leave. It was either cancel for good, or make do. Obviously, it would have been hugely preferable to have the man himself in the video.
BoigzTheBastard 8/18/2008 9:00 AM
FKN on MAIN I believe it is the industry standard to at least acknowledge the input of a vocal collaborator by printing "featuring..." on any recorded medium.
Theresa 8/18/2008 8:52 AM
Vocals Die vocals is regtig intens.

Credit where credit is due?
RJ 8/18/2008 7:35 AM
Kom nou manne... Die man doen alreeds so goed vir ons jong afk rock/metal "fans", gee die ou bietjie goeie erkenning/publisiteit man. Nog steeds 'n Koos Kombuis aanhanger, lekker liedjie!
Herman Maritz 8/17/2008 3:26 PM
Dis n baie lae vlak.

Therese 8/17/2008 12:19 PM
Impressive Good stuff, striking song, rocking music video! Die Francois ding pla my ook, but still, seriously good material.

NEEE!!!!!!! Dis net nie reg nie come on maak dit reg asb!!!!!!!
Confused. Great track but rather confused as to why Francois is not featured in the video. How can they get away with it? Koos, an explanation please!!
Karen 8/16/2008 3:55 PM
Such Potential but what a disaster! I think this is a [obscenity deleted]ing great song with a strong message which we are so accustomed to hearing with Kobus! Koos & Francois sound amazingly great together and then came the [obscenity deleted]-up, the music video! Dudes, I really think it should be edited with Francois, in person, included in the footage! With the potential of this song going gold why not put the effort in to correcting the mistake! Come on Koos, Die Burger & channel 24 do the right thing!
Jacqui Splfsx 8/16/2008 3:35 PM
obviously someone has no clue besides the fact that this is surely unlawful. i can't quite get my head around actually replacing someone as "attention grabbing" as Francois. for gods sakes... doesn't this poor soul know who Francois' fans are and what they are probably capable of doing to him?
Jacques 8/16/2008 12:55 PM
Why a replacement?? Why did they have to necessarily put someone on stage in Francois' place? They could have just left his voice in with no one in the video, rather than getting someone to "pose" as him...
Lieveke 8/16/2008 12:42 PM
Chitty chitty bang bang Plagiarism in its purest form has reared its head in the wild wild South African music industry. It demonstrates the lawlessness that is rife perfectly, and perhaps intended? It has brought the publicity to the real artist as it is indeed a crying shame, ok so sue Koos Kombuis and wait the 10years it will take to get to court while you wait for all the murder trials to take place. The video is in my opinion well done, even if it is a faux pas! It very clearly shows that South Africa is in a silent state of war, has been all these years, against crime, even pick pockets are highly active with everyone losing their cell phones on a night out. This less violent method is infuriating but at least non-violent. I had my heart strings pulled. The message is clear. Koos could have ofcourse asked Francois's permission but he's got his reasons I'm sure.
Kobus Prinsloo 8/16/2008 11:14 AM
Are you serious? Isnlt there some law against substituting a face over a voice unilateraly? Shocking, real schoolboy mistake from someone who should know much much better.
Chris 8/16/2008 9:01 AM
Not broadcast quality stuff at all I was so shocked when I saw some random dude doing Francois's vocals on the video! What is up with that??!! I'm dissappointed to say the least...It could have been a cool video, I mean Francois would have given it that awesome edge that every music video needs. Epic fail of an attempt at a cool music video.
Adriaan 8/16/2008 8:56 AM
What a faux pas! Why didn't they get Francois to do his own vocals on this video?? And then it's called a "professional" music video? How contradictory. This is bad stuff for SA music.
Darren 8/16/2008 8:50 AM
It's just wrong without Francois Not including Francois ruins the whole video. Point. A song with such great potential, but they blew it. It's a pity. A shame.
Martin 8/16/2008 8:47 AM
Professional? No. Swak!!! Professionally shot music video?? Jeez, what a dissappointment. The fact that Francois is left out of the video spoils it COMPLETELY. How can such a legend's contribution be thought so little of? Thats just swak man, really really swak. And when this vid airs on MK...People are going to be outraged that Francois isn't there!
Carl Goldiue 8/16/2008 8:37 AM
Are you kidding me? Where the hell is Francois Breytenbach Blom, and what the hell was with that crappy sound. Who the F@ck was that retard wannabe. Hierdie was 'n F@kken skande!
Charl 8/16/2008 8:18 AM
Reconcile this. Francois has added his voice to Koos' protest and his song. The Mike Stofile-wannabe miming Francois' vocals does no justice. This is reconciliation fraud.
Dane Beisheim 8/16/2008 7:45 AM
What the f@&*ck?!! WTF? who the hell this that dude supposedly doing backup vocals for Koos? Because it isn't Francois Breytenbach Blom, that's for sure! How can he call this a proffesional music video when there's shitty miming in it and the real vocalist doesn't even get any credit? A new bloody low for SA music...
BadBrain 8/16/2008 7:24 AM
DOODSTRAF !!
RinkyDink 8/16/2008 7:03 AM
did you think no one would notice? was this aimed at the plebs who have no interest or knowledge of SA music? If it wasn't you are seriously misguided if you thought no one would miss Francois in this video or (and hats off to you for trying) his unique vocals.
Evert 8/16/2008 6:47 AM
Stem volkome saam met die ander mense. Fake, fake, fake. "' Want, so waar as wragtag, hierdie kak moet nou endkry.' - Koos Kombuis 15 Februarie 2008".
skaam witman 8/16/2008 1:56 AM
more of the same AGNEE MAN wat n fokken let down geen wonder die musiek bedryf in die land is so kak nie.
Tiaan 8/16/2008 1:54 AM
'n shame Hoe kan mens iemand se woorde so uit sy mond steel, letterlik deur iemand op te sit om Francois se woorde te mime en dan word dit nog "the first professional quality SA music video" genoem. Ek sien niks professional nie, dis plain diefstal en blatante kopieering.
Rynhardt 8/16/2008 1:33 AM
Nooo Waars Blommie? :( Hy maak die song. Moerse let down.
Piet Delport 8/16/2008 1:28 AM
Francois Blom gemime?
JUST1F1 8/16/2008 1:00 AM
blegh Music video is a let down. Great idea, but putting some random person to mime Francois, not nice. There are hundreds of ways in which later footage could have been incorporated, or the shooting could have been postponed, seeing as it it didn't cost much... Coolness to Koos, but seriously, Francois would have made this mediocre video great. Just like his vocals makes the song great. So why don't we just put Kurt Darren's face to the vocals of Chris Chameleon. Fair game ey? BLEGH
Henry 8/16/2008 12:26 AM
Wat de vlok? Koos, goeie song, maar waar is blommie? Hy sing dan tog die oorspronklike lirieke?
Christo 8/15/2008 11:23 PM
Lame excuse This is a great sounding song and the right video could've made it sell so much more.. By not including Francois in the vid..that's just wrong.. I know everyone are counting their pennies these days, but realy guys..come on..
Weak This article goes to great lengths to describe the so-called "professionalism" that went into the production of this video, and yet no one involved was even competent enough to merely film seperate footage of Francois Blom (as the man himself suggested) and edit it into the final video. Weak.
Calvin Pearce 8/15/2008 11:10 PM
Hilariously hilarious "The show must go on...." Sue bru lol
Ecki Scholz 8/15/2008 11:03 PM
Lawsuit? If I was Francois Blom, I'd see a lawyer and either claim an injunction and stop the distribution of the video and have it reworked. Or negotiate an assignment of copyright against shitloads of money.
George Riet 8/15/2008 10:30 PM
Where's Blom? I can quite clearly hear Francois Blom, somehow don't see him, why the hell is this so?
Francois Breytenbach Blom 8/15/2008 6:59 PM
Phoning in sick.. ...which then automatically implies that you should get someone else to mime to the vocals, instead of shooting some solo footage later that can be edited into the video?
Niel 8/15/2008 2:10 PM
Blom Francois phoned in sick the day before the shoot...
Dr_Noir 8/15/2008 12:09 PM
Francois Blom Great song but who the heck is the guy in the video singing backing vocals? It's quite clearly the voice of Francois Blom (VOD, KOBUS!) but the dude in the video is not him! Why on earth didn't they get Francois in the video?
