The Parlotones: 24 Facts

Email · Print

The biggest band in South Africa right now are… surprise surprise, four white rockers with too much guyliner, and a bit of an odd name! So wise up. Here's what you need to know. We've also included one FALSE fact. Which one is it? If you can spot it first, and you've used your correct email address to post your guess, we'll send you a Channel24 T-Shirt. Promise.

The Parlotones

The Parlotones are: Kahn Morbee (vocals & guitar), Neil Pauw (drums), Paul Hodgson (guitar, keyboard), Glenn Hodgson (bass, piano, backing vocals).

1. The word "Parlotones" sounds a bit like "talking tones" if you speak a Latin language. But it's really a made up word - so all Google results for searches deliver only links related to the band. Taking notes, Taxi Violence?

2. Before they were a band, Kahn worked as a PR for Sovent Entertainment (their record label now), and Neil Pauw worked as a Mercedes Benz car salesman.

3. The band has always had a very clear image, dressing in synch and styling themselves professionally, right down to matching eye-liner.

4. Paul and Glenn learned to do spider eyeliner while working on a university production of Shakespeare's "As You Like It" during the 1997 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

5. Lead singer Kahn cites Aussie rocker, INXS's Kick and UK indie legends The Smiths' Louder than Bombs as the albums that made him want to be a singer in a rock band.

6. Paul's magical musical moment was hearing Chesney Hawkes' "The One and Only" when he was 10. "I just loved it. I played the song over and over and I’d look at the cover and say, I want to be like Chesney Hawkes when I grow up. I’m gonna be a rock star."

7. Niel has a different tip: "I used to listen to the Top 40 every Sunday. My dad and I used to take bets on what would be the Top 5. The first album I ever remember loving was rap music. It was DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. I loved it to death, knew it word for word. It was just so cool."

8. Glenn had more of a literary moment: "In standard 6 my English teacher gave me a tape with Nirvana's Nevermind on the one side and the Metallica Black album on the other side. And that was the first time I was ever really blown away by any music. That was my defining moment."

9. As often happens in SA, the Parlotones' big break came not through the media, but when their song "Beautiful" was picked up and used in a Irish Fuji Film commercial in 2006. However, the first single to receive international and South African radio play was actually "Dragonflies and Astronauts".

10. They were the first South African band to receive a multi-territory record deal, when "Beautiful"'s success resulted in a European license deal with Universal Music.

11. Things the Parlotones did in attempts to become famous include: waxing each other's legs, eating tripe in Soweto, and having water bombs thrown at them during live shows.

12. The Parlotones are popular with all sorts of South Africans – they've met the demand for their music with over 100 000 copies of their albums sold, and 280 live shows in the last year. "it seems like a lot, but in the same breath it looks like we had eighty days off!" quips Kahn.

13. Some of their most popular songs have been covers, noteably "Lisa se Klavier" (a classic Koos Kombuis song that you can download here) and "Here Comes A Man" (originally "Here Comes the Man", which was a big radio hit for one-album-wonders Boom Boom Room in '88.

14. Parlotones' strategy for covering other people's songs is basically to speed them up and change a few lyrics, which makes them more suitable for KarateParties. The band has never officially admitted this, but I personally can prove it beyond all reasonable doubt.

15. Kahn and the boys supported top indie band Starsailor on a recent UK tour.

16. The Parlotones have won two MTV Africa Awards, three South African Video Awards and they were chosen as the Face of the HD launch in SA.

17. They've launched their own blended red wine titled (perhaps appropriately, considering how much time they spend around drunk people in their line of work) "Giant Mistake". "Giant Mistake" is of course one of their best known songs, and features the lyric "And elegantly wasted, tasted more/More than I should". Read, more about the wine on their official site here.

18. The single "Beautiful" has gone to radio in 14 countries across Europe. Countries where they get radio play include Japan, Finland, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, France, Ireland, Asia and Turkey.

19. Fans from all over Europe have posted messages of support on the Parlotones' LastFM profile.

20. On the 2009 tour, Neil and Kahn were prevented from playing Dubai with Paul and Glenn, when the Dubai gov decided to cancel all SA visas without warning,. Paul and Glenn got in on their European passports and did the gig anyhow, "White Stripes-style." Oops: actually it was the other way round. Paul and Glen got left behind - thanks Bev. An extra Channel T-Shirt's on its way to you.

21. According to their tour tweets, the Parlotones' favourite city – the last one of their tour - was Moscow.

22. They were the first South African act to headline the Coca-Cola Dome in Joburg. In a turning of the tables, their support band, Spirits, are from Canada!

23. Their brand new CD, Stardust Galaxies, went gold within one week of release. This almost never happens with Rock albums in South Africa.

24. They've been together and actively pursuing world domination since 1998 – a lot longer than most bands give it before they break up over some girl.

Need even more useless information? Fine! You can follow them on twitter as @parlotones.

Anna Tilstone 11/16/2009 5:39 PM
Look back about 6 posts and you will see I did said no.4
Bev 11/16/2009 1:50 PM
Ah, thanks Jean!!
Jean Barker 11/16/2009 12:49 PM
Still nobody getting it right? The made-up answer is 4. Paul and Glenn learned to do spider eyeliner while working on a university production of Shakespeare's "As You Like It" during the 1997 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. But we'll send BEV a Tshirt, because she spotted an error we made when we got our facts mixed up with non-facts. Congratulations, Bev.
Bev 11/16/2009 12:19 PM
Well-spotted Christell!!!!! But, maybe that's just a typo?? However, if that is the blatant mistake, well done to you!!!
christell 11/16/2009 10:39 AM
No 23 - Stardust Galaxies not Startdust
Bev 11/16/2009 9:46 AM
Could it be No. 9. I seem to recall their first hit being "Funny Face", and I'm sure it was before 2006???
Anna Tilstone 11/14/2009 10:08 AM
No.4.They are together since 1998.
Ling ling 11/13/2009 7:33 PM
CONGRATULATIONS BEV...... GLAD U COULD KICK SOME ASS......
Diana 11/13/2009 6:34 PM
Number 11 is false..
Jean Barker 11/13/2009 4:45 PM
The correct answer still hasn't been posted. Sovent (it's shorthand, and also their website name.) Koos did write the song. And sure, Kahn may have worked at a bank, but he also did work at Sovereign Entertainment - at least, Music Ed Miles Keylock swears he did - as a PR dude. The false fact is like, so false that I MADE IT UP completely. Maybe I should call it the "falser" fact.
Rene 11/13/2009 3:08 PM
@Uncle Nope, Lisa se Klavier was written by Koos Kombuis
Uncle 11/13/2009 2:49 PM
Way more than one incorrect fact. Sovereign, not Sovent. Lisa se Klavier was Johannes Kerkorrel, brilliantly covered by Koos Kombuis. Kahn didn't play solo in Dubai, Neil was with him. Kahn was a Financial consultant...you know what...I think it is a trick...berry berry sneaky.
Rene 11/13/2009 2:29 PM
One more thing. According to Twitter Kahn didn't play solo in Dubai, Neil was with him.
Rene 11/13/2009 2:26 PM
I'm guessing No 6. Will any guy ever admit that they loved Chesney Hawkes???
Patrick 11/13/2009 2:10 PM
Kahn was a Financial consultant for the "Blue" Bank.
Jean Barker 11/13/2009 1:51 PM
Embarassingly enough, Bev's right - when I read that, I read it wrong and got the names mixed up. Silly me. But there's also another false fact. So we'll send you one shirt, Bev, and another to the person who spots the other one. Hasn't happened yet!
Neonols 11/13/2009 1:16 PM
This is the biggest rip-off band ever. The lead singer tries to be Michael Stipe of REM. Their music is like watered down oros. BLAND
Anna Tilstone 11/13/2009 12:14 PM
Agree with Bev,no.20 is wrong.
Grant 11/13/2009 11:50 AM
13 is incorrect. "Here Comes The Man" was released as a single in 1986. The song subsequently featured on the album "Stretch" in 1987.
FAn 11/13/2009 11:35 AM
@LV - now that is your opinion. My opinion, they are more than worthy of all the hype. An awesome band, awesome music, brilliant lyrics, and brilliant South African music ambassadors. Have been to more than one show, and have always been more than impressed. Can't wait for the Dome tomorrow. Not too many other local bands who have made it so big all over the world.
TonyT 11/13/2009 11:31 AM
I have listened to just about everything these guys have produced, and must say - they are just not very good musicians. In fact, if they werent so famous locally, I would say they are awful. Pretty amazing how far a good PR campaign can get you.
Bev 11/13/2009 11:11 AM
C'mon Jean - you know I'm right!!!
Bev 11/13/2009 11:07 AM
(From their FB profile) - the Dubai gig Kahn solo and unplugged. No South African's are allowed into Dubai at the moment, and luckily Kahn was born in Belgium so he has an EU passport. Sorry everybody.
BEV 11/13/2009 10:44 AM
No. 20 is wrong - Kahn sang on his own in Dubai - not Paul and Glen.
Jackie 11/13/2009 10:34 AM
No 14
monique 11/13/2009 10:32 AM
number 8 is false
Jean Barker 11/13/2009 10:15 AM
Nobody's guessed it yet. Keep trying.
cris 11/13/2009 10:04 AM
number 14-incorrect
LV 11/13/2009 9:56 AM
Certainly not worthy of all the hype, regardless of CD sales.
Sue 11/13/2009 9:34 AM
number 14
Jean Barker 11/13/2009 9:34 AM
@Stephan van Wyk > if it's my opinion, it also can't be false. But it happens to be true - they play the same songs about 30% faster. That's a fact. NOW here's my opinion: Their origional tracks rock. Love their choice of covers, but realisation of them sucks.
Peter 11/13/2009 9:16 AM
I thought Kahn was a "Financial consultant" in his former life
Judy du Plessis 11/13/2009 8:37 AM
Number 8, why would an English teacher give a pupil a music tape?
Judy du Plessis 11/13/2009 8:36 AM
number 8, why would an English teacher give a music tape to a pupil?
Stefan van Wyk 11/13/2009 8:09 AM
Number 14, it isnt a fact, its the writers personal opinion
Jaco vd Merwe 11/13/2009 6:47 AM
17 seems to be wrong.
