Year-end box office and best of lists are not the only indicator of which movies were popular during the year. TorrentFreak.com have revealed the 10 films that were the most illegally downloaded. We count down the surprising list in descending order.
10. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2
Of course the final instalment in the record-breaking fantasy franchise would make the list. That it just cracks the top 10 is perhaps the biggest surprise.
9. THE KING'S SPEECH
Colin Firth and the film itself won Oscars for this stately drama about King George VI's debilitating speech impediment which he has to overcome when he has to rally Britain as war was breaking out.
8. RANGO
2011 was not a particularly good year for animated film but Rango stood out with its quirky, screwball action comedy antics and the star-studded voice cast (including Johnny Depp and Abigail Breslin).
7. 127 HOURS
James Franco's Oscar-nominated performance was a heartwrencher. The true story told of an adventurer who had to amputate his own arm when he got stuck in a rock crevice alone for... 127 hours.
6. SUCKER PUNCH
Zack Snyder's action fantasy was critically mauled and flopped at the box office, but the promise of beautiful girls in stripper costumes, wielding huge automatic weapons may have appealed to Torrentfreaks.
5. I AM NUMBER FOUR
The sci-fi epic did not perform very well at the box office and the young adult novel-to-movie adaptation was set to follow in Twilight's footsteps as the 'Next Big Thing', but sequel plans have been scrapped.
4. SOURCE CODE
The excellent Duncan Jones sci-fi conundrum was one of the year's highlights and told of a futuristic soldier (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who finds himself in the body of another man who has to prevent a terrorist bomb from blowing up a train.
3. THOR
The Marvel superhero epic introduced the world to the impressive figure of Chris Hemsworth and, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, was a welcome precursor to The Avengers, to be released in mid-2012.
2. THE HANGOVER PART II
Since the first Las Vegas-set Hangover was such a massive success, a follow-up was always on the cards. This time around it was more of the same for Phil, Stu and the gang as they partied too hard and lost track of time in Bangkok, Thailand.
1. FAST FIVE
Hot cars, muscled torsos and sexy ladies make a winning combination - hence the long-running success of The Fast and the Furious franchise. Star Vin Diesel has revealed that there are already two more follow-ups in the pipeline!
