Boxer Dingaan Thobela apparently used former beauty queen Basetsana Kumalo as target practice and a punching bag when they were a couple.
A nice piece of juicy scandal to accompany your book release, hey Mr Thobela?
In his biography, Rose of Soweto, Dingaan apparently claims that he and a 16-year-old Basetsana lived together. Bassie's friends have come out guns blazing, insisting that Dingaan was bad for Bassie, and he even punched her and pointed a gun at her. He denies it of course, saying he did have a gun, but never used it in that way.
Sunday World reports that Dingaan feels his revelations have been taken out of context. “I wrote about my life and Bassie happened to be part of that. If you read the book you will realise it’s not about her." So whether he beat her up or not isn't relevant, because it's not 'about her'? And he's not worried about any statutory rape charges because he never says what they did while they lived together. Oh puhlease! His only saving grace is that Bassie is a lady and a respected businesswoman, and she'll probably want to avoid all this drama and scandal at all costs. Otherwise, she could take him for every cent he'll make out of this book.
Since Basetsana hasn't read the book herself, she too doesn't have too much to say about the issue - yet. Her statement is: "... I think it will be prudent to instruct my lawyer to read the book and if there are any defamatory things, advise me on what action to take. ” Such a diplomat.
This all sounds very familiar. Sporting hero, telling his side of the story, some broken hearts along the way... Joost should go into marketing.
So is it just more media hype, or does our former Miss SA have a harrowing story beneath her glossy exterior?
