Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek and wife Kimberly Brook have welcomed a healthy baby girl.

They have named their daughter Olivia.

James wrote on his Twitter page: "Had the blessing of becoming a father over the weekend... Couldn't come close to describing this bliss even if I had 140 million characters. (sic)"

The 33-year-old star then apologised in advance for any gushing baby posts he may make in the next few weeks.

He tweeted: “I apologize in advance for any obnoxiously precious new-dad tweets that may follow. I'm under her spell... (sic)"

James is already making plans for his daughter, and intends to introduce her to NFL football from an early age.

He joked: "If I watch football w/ my daughter now, she'll like the sounds of the NFL & want to watch it w/ me when she's older. (sic)"

James and Kimberly started dating in July 2009, one month after he separated from first wife Heather McComb.

The couple married in a Kabbalah ceremony in Israel last month.
