5 local magazine covers we love right now

2013-08-29 10:20
Cape Town - We've teamed up with the mysterious media critic and magazine cover 'mogul' MediaSlut to help us find the most creative, colourful and eye catching local mag covers out there.

We all know Vogue is the big kahuna when it comes to the September issue, but here's five local covers that totally got it right:
My Tyd (Rapport), 25 August

There are quite a few iconic covers of certain celebrities. Covers that you immediately recognize, even after 20 years. Covers that sometimes becomes synonymous with these celebrities. For Afrikaans (and South African) actor Neil Sandilands (yes, Bart from 7de Laan…) who now lives in Los Angeles, I think this is his iconic cover! My Tyd is a weekly magazine that is free with Rapport every Sunday, and the My Tyd team captured a great moment with Neil!

ELLE South Africa, September 2013

As soon as the September issues hit the shelves, we are bombarded with “Spring” and “Braai” covers. Year after year. But I think ELLE South Africa hit the nail on the head with their Rita Ora September 2013 cover; Everything just works, and screams “Spring” to me, while still staying fashionable! From the colour-scheme, the pink head-piece (that looks like a flower…), the final image to the typography…refreshing!

You might be interested to know that the US version of ELLE used the same image on their May 2013 cover, but their image had a dark grey background. I much more prefer our local version with the soft-palette and end product…

Food & Home Entertaining , September 2013

If you’re a foodie, and read Food & Home Entertaining magazine, you must have noticed a massive (and great) face lift in the recent covers and issues? I mean, they really have come a far way from their uninspiring covers like this April 2012 cover that even made the annual MediaSlut Top 10 Worst Covers list! This September 2013 cover is fresh, creative, playful and makes me look forward to the “happy days” to come with Spring just around the corner… (hopefully!)

British Airways High Life South Africa , August 2013

Some of the most unrecognized magazines in South Africa (read the World), are in-flight magazines! And if you don’t fly regularly, you might never even see the great work done…! But our in-flight magazines have come a very far way, and seems to be improving month after month, and one in-flight title that out-performs every month, is British Airways High Life South Africa. Their cover concepts just hit the ball out of the ball park (read skaap kraal) every month, and the humour in their cover lines are some of the sharpest… do yourself a favour and read them…

TRUE LOVE , September 2013

On every single TRUE LOVE cover so far, the celebrity has been wearing a nightgown/dress, so it was quite a surprise to see one of South Africa’s favourite exports Terry Pheto on the September 2013 cover of TRUE LOVE, dressed in a bikini, in Zanzibar! It was a risky move (because it’s just so different from all the other covers), but I think it was well worth the gamble, as it’s fresh, right for Spring, and Terry looks A-MA-ZING!
