Cape Town – It’s been 10 years since the Kardashian family first hit our screens with their reality TV show.
Since then it has attracted millions of viewers, produced 9 TV spinoffs and created a multi-million dollar brand that is a force to be reckoned with.
To celebrate 10 years of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, the famous ladies behind the brand opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about how their decade long stint on TV became so successful.
Here are 6 things we learnt from the Kardashian family's interview:
1. KUWTK was inspired by The Osbournes
One thing that everyone wants to know is how the reality TV show actually happened...
Well, Kris was still managing Caitlyn Jenner’s public appearances and Kim was in college when Ryan Seacrest, who is an executive producer of the show, said: “Everyone was talking about The Osbournes and I said, ‘Let's try to find something in this world and take it to E!’”
Shortly thereafter Kris approached Ryan with her vision and Ryan pitched the idea of sending a film crew to the Kardashian home and take it from there.
Short as it is, that was the start of an empire. And for the record, Kris denies that the show was ever Caitlyn’s idea after the Olympic gold medalist hinted it was her brainchild in her memoir, The Secrets Of My Life.
2. Becoming social media sensations
Just as KUWTK started taking off, social media, more specifically Twitter, had just come out too.
And believe it or not Seacrest was the one who advised Kim to get involved with it. Kris tells THR’s Leslie Bruce: “Ryan called Kim and said, ‘There's this thing called Twitter you might want to pay attention to it.’ The girls began embracing their audience and sharing their lives.”
3. Khloe was never on board with her spinoff with ex-husband Lamar Odom
One of the first of the nine KUWTK spinoffs was Khloe’s TV show with now ex-husband Lamar called Khloe and Lamar.
According to the Good American co-founder it was Lamar’s idea all along. She said: “He sold it to E!, and I let it happen because I wanted him to be happy. I was the one who cancelled it.”
4. Kris tried to stop Kim from marrying ex-husband Kris Humphries
Kim initially thought her anxiety about marrying NBA player Kris stemmed from filming the show. She told THR: “There was all this attention on the wedding, and I thought maybe it was just the pressure of the show giving me this anxiety.”
She then added that the night before her wedding Kris stepped in and told her she doesn’t have to go through with it.
She explained: “The night before, my mom pulled me aside, off camera, and was like, "This isn't it for you. Why don't you go away and I'll handle it?" I felt like, if I pulled out now, everyone's going to think I just did it for the show.”
But after the wedding the 36-year-old received backlash anyway, due to her abrupt divorce. “When I made the decision [to divorce], everyone said it was made up for the show. Everyone really wanted to take me down.”
5. The hardest episode to film for Kourtney was her break-up with Scott
Scott Disick has been a part of the Kardashian family since day one. He shares three kids with Kourtney and no matter the trials and tribulations their relationship has suffered through, he is always going to be a part of their life.
The on again/off again couple finally called it quits in 2015 after Scott was photographed with another woman.
The hardest episode to film was my break-up with Scott. I had a lot of anxiety about it, and finally said let's just get this over with.
6. Kim and Kanye are definitely trying for another baby
Kim admits she absolutely hated being filmed while pregnant, she said: “I definitely wish I didn't film so much pregnant. I looked like such a cow and I can't stand to see those episodes.”
Kim also indirectly confirmed that her and Kanye are trying for a third baby via a surrogate. “There have been a lot of things said and Kanye and I have not confirmed anything. We're definitely trying. We are hoping so.”
