7 things you didn’t know about Meghan Markle

Cape Town - In case you some how missed it, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are engaged!

The royal announcement was made on Monday morning and was followed by an adorable photo call to show off the newly engaged couple. Shortly after making their first appearance since the news, the couple gave a candid interview sharing their love story.

While Meghan has been in the public eye for more than a dozen years, most people heard her name for the first time when Prince Harry confirmed that they were dating in November last year.

Here are 7 things you might not have known about her:

1. She’s an actress

Meghan went from small parts on such TV series as FringeWithout a Trace and CSI: Miami to a starring role on the USA Network drama Suits.

She played paralegal and aspiring lawyer Rachel Zane on the show since it started in 2011, however informed her bosses in October that she would not be returning for an eighth season.

2. She is the co-creator of a clothing line

Meghan co-created a clothing line for Canadian retailer Reitmans. She is also the brand ambassador of the retailer and recently released a new five-piece collection.

3. She had a lifestyle website

Meghan established The Tig in 2014 as a place to "integrate social consciousness and subjects of higher value than, let's say ... selfies" with beauty and fitness advice.

Sadly she called time on the blog in April this year. While Meghan provided no detail as to why she was ending her blog at the time, reports speculated that it had something to do with her strengthening relationship with Prince Harry.

4. She credits her parents for her ability to balance her glamorous job and the joy of giving back

Meghan credits her parents for showing her both the glitter of Hollywood and the joy of giving back.

Born in Los Angeles, she accompanied her lighting-director dad - who has won two emmys fro his work on medical drama General Hospital - to sitcom and soap-opera sets, while her therapist mom brought her along on exotic trips to places where poverty was the norm.

"This is what I grew up seeing, so that is what I grew up being: A young adult with a social consciousness to do what I could, and to, at the very least, speak up when I knew something was wrong," she recently wrote on her site.

5. She has royal taste

Being a clothing designer, Meghan has shown elegance and sophistication in her choice of clothing, much like the Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate and Meghan wore the same dress within a two year time fram and while they both looked beautiful, the ladies put their own twist on the lace Diane von Furstenberg's Zarita dress.

Meghan went for a slightly sexier shorter length navy version in 2012 while Kate opted for a full length black version of the dress in 2014.

7. She was married to movie producer Trevor Engelson

Meghan married film producer Trevor Engelson in September 2011, after having dated since 2004. The former couple separated in May 2013 and were officially divorced 3 months later.
