Cape Town - Haul out your knitting needles, get hold of some wool and support a new world record initiative by knitting blankets for the needy.

67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day founder Carol Steyn announced this morning that the initiative was chasing a world record this year.

The event was held at the Saxon Hotel in Sandhurst, north of the Johannesburg CBD. The MC was ineffable radio personality Anele Mdoda.

Last year, following a challenge from former Nelson Mandela’s long-time personal assistant Zelda la Grange to knit 67 blankets, 6 000 blankets were knitted.

Steyn said: "And that was just with the people I knew and my 1 000 followers on Twitter. Imagine what we can do from each of our own circles of influence."

The guests which included Anele Mdoda, Cell C ambassador and actress Sophie Ndaba, Miss South Africa Ziphozakhe Zokufa, her predecessors Claudia Henkel and Melinda Bam, Morning Live presenter Leanne Mannas, Johnny Clegg and his son Jessie Clegg, singer Lira, TV and radio personality Penny Lebyane, and actor Tumisho Masha.

As the initiative’s new sponsor, Cell C has contributed to the various prizes available for those taking part in the initiative – such as an instant R210 000 that will go to the first school to donate 670 blankets.

Steyn explained that the number 21 was important "because it is the 21st year of South Africa’s democracy."

Other supporters of the initiative include saxophonist Kenny G, Gareth Cliff, and businessperson Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe. The Nelson Mandela foundation is also a partner and supporter of the 67 blankets for Mandela Day initiative.

Prior to distribution to those in need of them, the 21 000 blankets will be taken to the Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre at the Union Buildings where a photo will be taken.

Cell C chief executive José dos Santos said: "I’m confident we can make the record well before our deadline!".

As part of their support, certain Cell C stores will be drop off points for all knitted blankets. The cellular network has also thrown in Huawei phones for those who post a selfie with their knitted blanket.
