Actress sentenced to 18 years for attempting to poison President Obama

Los Angeles - Actress Shannon Guess Richardson was charged with possession of a toxin for use as a weapon after sending letters laced with ricin to president Barack Obama and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Richardson pleaded guilty to the charges in December and she has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the crime.

The actress appeared in the television series The Walking Dead and The Vampire Diaries and the film The Blind Side alongside Sandra Bullock.

Ricin is a highly toxic naturally occurring lectin produced in the seeds of the castor oil plant, Ricinus Communis. It can be poisonous if inhaled, ingested or injected into the bloodstream.
