Wills called a douche

Charlottetown - Britain's Prince William was accidentally called a "douche" during his official tour of Canada.

The second in line to the British throne is currently on a North American tour with new wife Duchess Catherine and during a trip to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, the pair were introduced to Canadian singer Meaghan Blanchard ahead of her concert.

However, much to her horror, Meaghan mixed up her words, addressing William as a "douche" – a crude term for someone who isn't that clever – rather than a duke as she thanked him for their visit.

Meaghan quickly recovered, and added: "I can't believe that just happened."

Fortunately, William and Catherine saw the funny side of the gaffe and laughed off the incident.

‘Really blessed’

Speaking ahead of her performance, Meaghan had said: "It's an amazing opportunity. I feel really, really, really blessed.

"Who knows what can come from that, but I think the important thing is putting yourself out there with a smile when the opportunity comes."

Earlier in the day, William and Catherine were in Quebec City, where they shook hands and exchanged polite conversation with the waiting crowds.

William, who spoke in French and apologised for his awkward accent, thanked supporters for their warm welcome in the Quebec provincial capital, coming one day after anti-monarchist protests in Montreal marred their tour of Canada.

He said: "I hope that we will have the chance to get to know each other over the years to come,"
