Cate Blanchett and husband adopt a little girl

2015-03-09 21:00

Sydney - Oscar-winning Australian actress Cate Blanchett and her husband have adopted a daughter, their fourth child, the couple's management said on Saturday.

"The Upton family have adopted a baby girl," a statement issued on behalf of the pair said. "Her name is Edith Vivian Patricia Upton."

The 45-year-old and her screenwriter husband Andrew Upton - who recently announced they are moving to the United States - already have three sons: Ignatius, 6, Roman, 10, and Dashiell, 13.

As photos emerged of Blanchett holding a baby on a Qantas flight to Sydney earlier this week, reports had circulated of a new addition to the family.

The Australian Women's Weekly magazine had said that Blanchett had been seen with a baby girl during the week at the school attended by her sons.

"Cate has told friends at the local school that she and her husband, theatre producer Andrew Upton, are deliriously happy with the new addition to their family," it reported.

Blanchett started out as a theatre actress in Sydney, where she won critical and popular acclaim and has gone on to win two Oscars for her roles in The Aviator and Blue Jasmine.

The actress is set to leave her Sydney home to move to America later this year, where Upton will pursue writing opportunities and Blanchett can continue her film career.

"There's obviously a lot of things that have been happily, happily put on hold for both of us... in other countries," she told Network Ten recently.

"Australia's always home," she added.

Discussing the move, Upton told The Sydney Morning Herald last month that the couple had previously spent nine years in England and loved it.

"But now we'd like to try America," he told paper, adding that their children were still young enough to be moved without disrupting their education too much.

Blanchett was joint artistic director with Upton of the Sydney Theatre Company from 2008 to 2012.
