Celebrities praise Ellen Page for coming out as gay

Los Angeles - Anna Kendrick and many other stars have sent messages of praise to Ellen Page for coming out.

The Inception star announced she is gay on Friday, prompting many to show their love and appreciation for her brave move.

Anna - who starred alongside Ellen in Juno - wrote on Twitter: "Mad mad mad mad mad mad crazy love and praise for @EllenPage today. Congrats to you, you light, talent, and beauty.(sic)"

Ricky Martin - who famously came out over the intent in 2010 - tweeted: "Very beautiful Ellen Page!!! I'm very happy for you!!! You are free! (sic)"

Paramore singer Hayley Williams added: "Ellen Page just made me cry on Valentine's Day. With HAPPY TEARS!"

Actress Evan Rachel Wood and reality TV star Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi also congratulated Ellen, as did former *N Sync star Lance Bass.

He tweeted: "I just watched Ellen Page come out! Wow! What a speech! Congrats!! (sic)"

Ellen made her announcement at Human Rights Campaign's Time to Thrive event in Las Vegas, Nevada with a passionate statement.

She said: "I'm here today because I'm gay. And because maybe I can make a difference - to help others have an easier and more hopeful time.

"Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility. I also do it selfishly, because I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out.

"My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain."
