Cape Town - The owner of a gallery in Cape Town has received hate mail due to an exhibition featuring SA zef rappers Die Antwoord by photographer Roger Ballen, reports Die Burger.

The images, currently being displayed at the gallery, contains drawings of genitals in the background of some of the photos.

"This is the first time that something like this has happened to me. But when you combine Ballen and Die Antwoord, you have to expect such a response," Heidi Erdmann, the owner of the Erdmann Contemporary gallery, told Die Burger.

'It's vulgar'

One of the mails she received reads: "It's vulgar. It's worse than looking at people eating meat."

The opening of the exhibition was held on Tuesday evening and Erdmann says the response she received from visitors was positive. She added that Ballen's newest work is sure to have people talking.

Ballen is also popular for his works such as Dorps: Small Towns of South Africa and Platteland: Images from Rural South Africa.

He went on tour earlier this year with Die Antwoord while they were producing the music video for their song I Fink U Freeky. The video has already reached more than 14 million hits on YouTube.

The exhibition will continue until 27 October.
