Johannesburg – The well-known ex-Egoli actor, Hennie Smit, is currently in hospital with pneumonia and a broken rib.
The actor, best known for his role as Bertie in the axed M-Net soapie Egoli, is currently playing the role of Dêda in Lefra productions’ My Boetie Se Sussie Se Ou.
According to a media statement by Charl Senekal, marketing manager of Lefra Productions, the actor was hospitalised on Friday.
“It would be life-threatening for Hennie to try and leave the hospital to continue his role on stage,” Senekal said.
The director of the play, Frans Swart, had to take over Smits role at the last minute in order for the production to continue over the weekend.
Hennie released a statement from his hospital bed saying the “illness caught me off guard”.
“Due to all the coughing I broke a rib. I’m so glad that Frans could jump in and save the show.
“I‘m getting the best treatment possible and I hope and pray I’ll be healthy and ready to continue with the show as our next performance is on Tuesday in Windhoek, Namibia,” Smit said.
