Gareth Cliff goes on Twitter rant after receiving criticism over political tweet

Johannesburg – Gareth Cliff got a little emotional on Wednesday after expressing his personal political views on Twitter.

The outspoken 5FM DJ, known for his controversial statements, wanted to share his view on Mamphela Ramphele's decision to stand as the DA's presidential candidate and tweeted: "I am pleased that the Top 3 most powerful people in the DA are women. That deserves our applause, even if we won't vote DA."

But after receiving some criticism for his previous tweet he quickly added: "When I said 'we' I wasn't being specific. Everyone who supports the DA calm down..."

But that was still not enough so he decided to clear things up: "Don't put me in a box. Don't stereotype me. You don't know who I vote for, or why. Even if you did, it would be scant information."

After which Twitter user Evan Morris comically responded with: "@GarethCliff Calm down. I seldom even think about you, let alone stereotype you. Sheesh."

Gareth finally ended his Twitter tantrum with the following: "If you think that the party/person you vote for defines you, there's very little going on in your head or your life."

On his Twitter bio Gareth describes himself as "Chief plenipotentiary. Descended from the apes. Defender of the Faithless."

But Gareth assured us everything is okay: "Oi, News24, I'm flattered that my tweets make news - but I promise it wasn't a rant. I'm so chilled I'm about to have a drink."
