Giuliana and Bill welcome baby boy

Cape Town - Reality TV couple Giuliana and Bill Rancic have become the proud parents of their first child, a baby boy born in Denver, Colorado, reports E! News.

Edward Duke Rancic was born at 22:12 local time on Wednesday night in Denver. Their new bundle of joy was born via a gestational carrier and weighed 3.2kg.

The new arrival comes just in time for the couple's fifth wedding anniversary, which they will celebrate on Saturday, 1 September.

"Bill and I are blessed beyond words to welcome Edward into our lives," Giuliana tells E! News. "Thank you so much to everyone who supported us along the way. We are so in love with the little guy already!"

Edward Duke is the couple's biological child.

Miscarriage

Bill announced his son's birth via Twitter:

E! News reports that labour lasted just over four hours and that both Bill, 41, and Giuliana, 37, were in the delivery room for the entire birth of their baby.

Bill cut the umbilical cord minutes after the baby was born, and Giuliana was the first person to hold her son.

Giuliana and Bill decided to use a gestational surrogate after the couple's public battle to become pregnant resulted in a devastating miscarriage and a number of unsuccessful IVF treatments, which were documented in their reality show Giuliana and Bill.

The couple's plans to start a family were put on hold in 2011 when Giuliana was diagnosed with breast cancer and opted to undergo a double mastectomy.

Besides their E! reality show, Giuliana works as an E! presenter and Fashion Police host while Bill, an entrepreneur, won the first season of Donald Trump's The Apprentice.
