Johannesburg – The rumours regarding Princess Charlene of Monaco’s agreement with Prince Albert II to ensure an heir and then divorce are entirely untrue.
Charlene’s father Mike Wittstock maintained this stance on Monday after French news magazine VSD reported that the couple’s marriage were on the rocks.
“I don’t know where the rumours are coming from. There is a reason for everything that happened,” said Wittstock.
Legal experts of the principality supposedly suggested the ‘arrangement’, reports express.co.uk.
A source in Monaco reportedly said that a legitimate heir is the main reason for the “unusual marriage”.
"Once the succession of the dynasty is assured, each of them can be free again. Divorce is a tradition in the Grimaldi family." The source told VSD according to express.co.uk.
'Disappointed'
The world’s media were buzzing during the royal newlyweds visit to South Africa.
Wittstock confirmed that the pair did in fact sleep in separate hotels, but explained that this was due to logistical reasons.
“Charlene stayed at the Oyster Box Hotel (in the Buthelezi suite) and Albert stayed at the Hilton Hotel. This is because Albert attended the conference for the International Olympic Committee, which was held at the Hilton,” explained Wittstock.
The conference started at 07:00 in the morning and Albert did not want to get up unnecessarily early and to sit in traffic.
The Sunday press also noted that Charlene seemed happier and more relaxed during her meeting with Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu in Cape Town than with her husband during their meeting with President Jacob Zuma in Durban.
According to Wittstock Charlene was more at ease during her visit to the Desmond Tutu Foundation in Noordhoek because she was busy with a project that she enjoys.
Wittstock maintains that not one of the “scandalous stories” is true. “I am disappointed in the media. South Africans should be supporting Charlene rather than spreading nasty rumours.”
