London – Kate Middleton's scar was reportedly caused by a childhood sporting injury.
The wife of Prince William unwittingly unveiled the mark in her hairline at her first official solo engagement when she stood in for her father-in-law Prince Charles at a charity dinner last week.
While it has been confirmed it was caused by an operation, it is believed an accident while playing sport lead to Kate having to get treatment.
A source told Grazia magazine: "Everyone knows Catherine was sporty at school and she told me how once she had a sporting accident. She was hit on the head when she was 14 or 15. It was when she was at school, at Marlborough.
"Later she was taken to hospital by her mother and had to have an operation. I can only assume the two were connected."
Kate is not alone in having a scar on her head - her husband William also has a mark, which he has dubbed his Harry Potter scar, from when he was hit with a golf club at the age of 13.
