Lady Gaga shuts down Twitter account

Los Angeles - Lady Gaga has "temporarily shut down" her Twitter account @ladygaga.

27-year-old Gaga has shocked her 39 million plus followers by changing her profile picture to the default egg symbol, and posting a message saying she is staying off the website for the time being.

Her profile reads: "This interface has been shut down temporarily. Please check back for updates."

Speculation is now ample, as Gaga has started the promotions for her upcoming third album ARTPOP.

The pop superstar also deleted tweets from February, just before she postponed several Born This Way Ball tour dates because of a hip injury, which needed surgery.

Last month, Gaga was crowned Forbes' World’s Most Powerful Musician of 2013 and her huge Twitter following contributed to her position.

The Born This Way smash outdid the annual ranking; which is determined by earnings, social media influence and press mentions.

This is largely thanks to her Born This Way world tour, which earned an enormous $168m and her abundant use of social media.

This includes her 39 million Twitter followers as well as her 57 million Facebook fans.
