Laverne Cox: I'm an actress before an activist

Los Angeles - Laverne Cox will always put acting first.

The Orange Is The New Black star - who is an advocate for the LGBT community - has confessed she prioritises her career over her beliefs because she "loves" being an artist.

Speaking at a screening of the Netlfix series in Hollywood on Wednesday, she said: "The work of being an artist is about ... it's not about being politically correct.

"It's not always about making people happy. It's not about always being careful what you say, and I love that space of being an artist, and that is what I always prioritise."

The 30-year-old star added she has struggled to adapt since finding fame on the show and still isn't used to the platform it has given her to express her views.

She said: "I'm learning. ... At the end of the day, I understand that I'm just a storyteller. Even in my advocacy, I'm really telling stories."

Meanwhile, the raven-haired beauty has been very vocal in supporting reality TV star Bruce Jenner's decision to come out as transgender in recent weeks.

Following the revelation that he had started transitioning into a woman, Laverne admitted she thinks his actions will have helped save lives.

She said: "People's lives will be saved. People will be helped by this."
