London - Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton have refused to use a private jet for their first official tour abroad.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are said to have saved the nation's taxpayers as much as £200 000 by choosing to travel with British Airways when they partake in their two-week tour of Canada and California instead.
Catherine, 29, has also reportedly told royal aides that she doesn't want her own hairdresser or lady-in-waiting, while her husband is taking essential staff only.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "William wants to distance himself from any claims he is extravagant or wasteful like other family members."
The insider added that the royal couple's thriftiness will put more pressure on William's father and uncle to spend less public money.
They continued: "But the fact he is flying home on a normal airline will make it even harder for the likes of Charles and Andrew to justify private jets."
First royal tour
Meanwhile, details of the prince and princess's itinerary for the trip have emerged.
The royal couple will travel to eight cities in Canada between June 30 and July 8, including Quebec City, Montreal, and Summerside on Prince Edward Island.
A royal source said: "The couple are very much looking forward to their first joint royal tour. Their purpose is to strengthen the very strong ties that exist between Canada and their royal family and for the duke and the duchess to get to know Canada better."
They will then go to the US, where they will spend their time in Los Angeles and its surrounding area on a three-day official visit, which will reportedly include a party held by Hollywood studio executive Steve Tisch.
