Original Freaky Friday actor dies at age 86

Los Angeles - Freaky Friday star Dick Van Patten has died aged 86.

The veteran actor - who played Harold Jennings in the original 1976 Disney classic and was a popular American TV star in the 1980's - has passed away due to complications with diabetes.

People magazine confirmed he died at Saint John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California on Tuesday morning.

His publicist Jeff Bullard confirmed: "I am sorry to report this sad news. He [Dick] was the kindest man you could ever meet in life. A loving family man. They don't make them like him anymore. His family will not be doing any press at this time."

Dick - who had Type 2 Diabetes [effecting the amount of insulin the body produces] - had struggled with the illness for some time and in 2006, was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles after suffering a diabetic stroke, but later recovered.

The New Yorker sadly leaves behind wife, actress Pat Van Patten and their sons, Nels, Jimmy, and Vincent.

As a professional film star, he did not shy away from acting even in his senior years.

Dick - most popular for his role on Eight Is Enough - last appeared on the small screen in 2011 on hit US television show Hot in Cleveland, alongside co-star The Proposal actress Betty White.
