Cape Town – Rashida Jones has retracted her recent comments urging John Travolta to admit he is gay.
Rashida was publicising her new movie Celeste and Jesse Forever when the conversation turned to her admiration for singer Frank Ocean, who earlier this year revealed he was previously in a relationship with a man.
Her writing partner and former boyfriend Will McCormack told website SpinningPlatters.com: "There needs to be, like, a professional athlete that comes out."
Rashida, 36, added: "And a movie star! It's time... Like John Travolta? Come out! Come on. How many masseurs have to come forward? Let's do this."
On Tuesday, Rashida posted a tweet apologising for her words:
John Travolta has been at the centre of a storm of sexual assault lawsuits filed by masseurs, and was also accused of attempting to perform oral sex on his Grease co-star, the late Jeff Conaway, in the 90s by Conaway's former fiancée Vikki Lizzi.
In 2010, Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, a longtime friend of Travolta's, was quoted in The Advocate magazine: "My feeling about John has always been that we know and we don’t care. Look, I’m sorry that he's uncomfortable with it, and that's all I can say. It only draws more attention to it when you make that kind of legal fuss. Just leave it be."
