Cape Town - Hollywood star Sean Penn turned heads while tucking into peri-peri baby chicken at a casual Cape Town taverna on Wednesday, City Press reported.
When asked by staff at Dias Tavern why his girlfriend, Charlize Theron, didn’t accompany him to South Africa, Penn retorted: “Who says she didn’t?”
The actor sat at a leather booth next to a wall lined with Portuguese flags, bright soccer posters and murals depicting the feats of Bartolomeu Dias and his seafaring brethren. He sipped cranberry juice and had chocolate mousse for dessert at the plastic-covered table.
Alayne Reesberg, chief executive officer of Cape Town World Design Capital 2014, was at the restaurant for a business meeting when she spotted Penn. “Oh yes, he is charming. We waved at him and he waved back, twice,” she said.
Penn is in Cape Town to scout locations for a new film, the name of which is not yet known. It appears that his companions at Dias Tavern were local filmmakers.
South African singer David Kramer was having lunch at the taverna too and joked that he had arranged to meet Penn there.
A Cape Town institution since 1988, Dias Tavern is popular with local patrons for its unpretentious decor and reasonably priced food. Waiter Yannick Mbandla says Planning Minister Trevor Manuel, who recently retired, had baby kingklip there just two weeks ago.
Penn (56) and Theron (38) were first spotted together in Hawaii in early January and have become a regular sighting since – often with Theron’s adopted toddler son, Jackson, in tow. They drew stares kissing furiously at a star-studded Oscar afterparty hosted by Penn’s ex-wife, Madonna.
The Oscar-winning couple seems to be on a South African sightseeing spree and was photographed at the Augrabies waterfall near the Northern Cape town of Upington last week.
Theron is said to be in talks to star in Penn’s new directorial effort, The Last Space.
