Store declines to comment on SA actress theft allegations

Johannesburg – Checkers has declined to comment on allegations that a case of shoplifting has been opened against a local actress.

The manager of the shop in question slammed the phone down on Channel24 reporters who tried to get a comment regarding the incident. Several attempts to redial the number went unanswered.

According to an article published by eNCA on Wednesday night a South African actress was arrested for allegedly shoplifting from the major retail store at Cresta Shopping Mall in Johannesburg.

Police told the TV news station that anti-theft sirens went off as the actress was leaving.

Sergeant Obakeng Mabaso told eNCA that a female was in police custody at Linden police station.

A case of shoplifting had been opened against her by Checkers.

Since news first broke the internet has been buzzing with sympathy for the actress; “I'm sure she just forgot to pay, give the poor girl a break she had a headache!” one user wrote on Facebook.

Another wrote; “Tjo people r so judgemental shame, have u never almost left the shop without paying some stupid R20 item cos u had so much going on in ur mind?(sic)”

The actress, whose identity is known to Channel24, could not be named until she was formally charged.
