Sir Cliff Richard was aware of allegations for 'many months'

London - Sir Cliff Richard has been aware of sex offence allegations against him for "many months".

The 73-year-old star has released a statement following the news on Thursday that a property belonging to him in the Sunningdale area of Berkshire, South East England had been searched by police in relation to an alleged historical offence.

He said: "For many months I have been aware of allegations against me of historic impropriety which have been circulating online.

"The allegations are completely false. Up until now I have chosen not to dignify the false allegations with a response, as it would just give them more oxygen.

"However, the police attended my apartment in Berkshire today without notice, except it would appear to the press."

The Summer Holiday hitmaker - who is currently believed to be residing at his home in Portugal - went on to reiterate that he disputes the allegation and claimed he would be more than willing to help the police with their investigation.

He added: "I am not presently in the UK but it goes without saying that I will cooperate fully should the police wish speak to me.

"Beyond stating that today's allegation is completely false it would not be appropriate to say anything further until the police investigation has concluded."

Sir Cliff's home was searched in connection with an allegation of a sexual nature dating back to the 80s involving a boy under the age of 16, but no arrests have been made, according to a statement from South Yorkshire Police.
