Steve Hofmeyr releases statement after arrest

Cape Town – Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr released a statement on his Facebook page on Friday morning after he was arrested for speeding on Thursday night.

Hofmeyr was arrested near Bronkhorstspruit doing 175km/h and was released on bail of R500.  He will appear in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of reckless and negligent driving and for exceeding the general speed limit.

According to Hofmeyr's Facebook page he was rushing from Pretoria to a concert in Badplaas when  he was pulled over on the N4 and arrested for exceeding a speed of 160km/h.

"I concede this was irresponsible and dangerous. The Bronkhorstspruit officers in charge were friendly, professional and thorough. Bail was set and paid. Although this is the first time this has happened to me in 30 years of travelling, I expect nothing less from our SAPS and Traffic Departments. Thanks guys and girls on duty," Hofmeyr wrote.

Julius Malema was also arrested on the same night for speeding on the N1 and was charged for reckless and negligent driving and for exceeding the general speed limit.

Hofmeyr tweeted the following referring to Malema:
