The 9 most commonly used swearwords on Twitter according to researchers

Los Angeles – In a recent article published by the Guardian, the publication revealed a list of swearwords most commonly used on Twitter.

The data was collected by researchers at Wright State University in Ohio and found that swearing on the micro-blogging site was mostly an early-week thing.

“Tweets become more and more likely to contain a swearword as the day progresses, perhaps reflecting the accumulation of things we have to swear about, and peak profanity is reached between midnight and 1.30am, suggesting that people who are awake at that time are, let's say, the least inhibited. Yet Friday, Saturday and Sunday are consistently the least sweary days of the week,” the Guardian reported.

After sampling 51 million tweets the research found that the following swearwords were most commonly used on Twitter:

1. Fuck – Used in 34.7% of tweets

2. Shit – 15.0%

3. Ass – 14.5%

4. Bitch - 10.3%

5. Hell - 4.5%

6. Whore - 1.8%

7. Dick - 1.7%

8. Piss - 1.5%

9. Pussy - 1.2%
