UK taxpayers pay up for Prince Charles

London - Official figures show taxpayer funding for Prince Charles has increased substantially in the past year - but so has his tax bill.

The heir to the throne received nearly £2m from government departments and government grants, nearly 18 percent more than the year before.

The prince's office says Charles' income from his Duchy of Cornwall estate increased by roughly 4% last year. Revenue from the land estate and business increased to nearly £18m.

Officials said on Tuesday that Prince Charles also paid almost £4.4m in tax, 26 % more than a year before.

Buckingham Palace is expected to release figures about Queen Elizabeth II's finances in the next two weeks.
