Winchester - Britain's Prince William and his wife Catherine spent their second wedding anniversary apart on Monday, with Kate visiting a hospice on her own.
Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, spent the day chatting to children at the hospice while her husband was on duty as a search and rescue helicopter pilot.
It was in marked contrast to their glittering wedding in London's Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011, watched by an estimated two billion people around the world and about one million on the streets.
Catherine was at the Naomi House hospice in Winchester, southern England, while William was at his Royal Air Force base on the island of Anglesey, northwest Wales.
Anniversary present
The couple are expecting their first baby, which is due in July and will be third in line to the throne behind William and his father Prince Charles.
Catherine toured the hospice, meeting children with life-shortening conditions, their parents, staff and volunteers.
Professor Khalid Aziz, chairman of trustees, gave the duchess an anniversary present: a craftwork creation of the children's character the Hungry Caterpillar.
It was made on cotton, the traditional gift couples exchange after being married for two years.
"Two years ago to the day, you were in a slightly larger building than this one - probably not having quite as much fun," Aziz said. "But you did it very well, we were all totally enthralled."
Catherine will not see William on Monday but it is likely they celebrated the anniversary privately at the weekend.
