William and Kate take a break from their hectic schedule in New Zealand

Wellington - The jet-setting duke and duchess of Cambridge took a day of rest on Tuesday after a whirlwind week of jet boating, yacht racing, playing cricket, coaching rugby and meeting local subjects on their 10-day visit to New Zealand.

The royal couple, who have brought 8-month-old son Prince George with them on his first official overseas tour, are using Government House in Wellington as a base on the first leg of their 7-25 April tour of New Zealand and Australia.

The large two-storey Edwardian house has eight guest suites, a ballroom, conservatory and small swimming pool, but there was no official confirmation on where they would spend their day off.

The couple has been greeted by thousands of New Zealanders bearing gifts and flowers at their public appearances, despite cloudy skies, wind and rain following them for much of the visit.

Royal Visit Office spokesperson Allen Walley said the small town of Cambridge in central North Island had come out on top in terms of per capita support for the royals, with a crowd of 15 000 people lining the town square for William and Kate's visit on Saturday.

The royal road show, which has seen William and Kate board a Royal New Zealand Air Force Boeing 757 most mornings as they travelled the country on day trips, has run like clockwork.

With the tour being covered by 470 accredited media representatives, Walley said, "The problems I have had to deal with are usually along the lines of photographers leaving their tripods behind somewhere."

The duke and duchess are to spend Wednesday morning, their last day in New Zealand, on a visit to the police training college and a stroll through Wellington's Civic Square before they leave for Sydney to continue their Down Under tour in Australia.
