Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards are over!

Los Angeles - Zayn Malik has ended his engagement with Perrie Edwards.

The former One Direction member reportedly called time on the relationship a fortnight ago, nearly two years after he got engaged to the Little Mix star in August 2013.

A source told MailOnline: "Perrie is absolutely devastated. Zayn called off the engagement two weeks ago, she's so upset.

"Perrie is being a trooper about it and putting on a brave face but she's devastated. She's doesn't know what he's thinking. She's going to go out and promote the new single but obviously the timing could not be worse, especially when she's going to be doing so many interviews."

Perrie took to her Twitter account to thank her "family, friends and fans" for their support, she went on to ask her fans to be understanding if she seems quiet when meeting her.

The 22-year-old singer sparked speculation she was no longer engaged to Zayn when her bandmate Jesy Nelson uploaded a picture to Instagram with her engagement ring visibly absent.

A source added to Us Weekly magazine: "He just wanted to move on and start over in all ways."

The pair began dating in March 2012 after Little Mix won the previous year's series of The X Factor, but their relationship has been dotted with rumours of cheating, most recently in March when Zayn - who has a tattoo of Perrie on his arm - was reported to have had an affair whilst on tour in Thailand.

More recently however, Zayn - who left One Direction in March to pursue a solo career - gushed about his former fiancee in an interview with a French magazine.

He said: "There's nothing I don't talk about with her. I talked to her a lot about my decision [to leave the band]. She's a fantastic listener and she understood I couldn't carry on like that, mentally or physically."
