Cape Town - Many people are reluctant to admit to having mental health problems, but singer Demi Lovato has come out to say she’s proud of her bipolar disorder.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine the 25-year-old spoke about her struggle with drug abuse and her bipolar diagnosis.

“I'm not sick of it. If anything, I'm proud to be bipolar and speak about it,” the Cool for the Summer singer said.

“Bipolar is a mood disorder. I deal with mood swings. I deal with episodes of mania and bipolar depression phases as well.”

She added that she has taken the opportunity to use her voice to help others.

“I feel proud that I've been able to do that,” she told Rolling Stone.

The former Disney actress was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2011 after she went to rehab following a struggle with bulimia, depression and self-harm, according to Women’s Health.

Over the years she has been a part of various campaigns that aid people struggling with mental health disorders such as Be Vocal: Speak up for mental Health.

Speaking about why she decided to share this very personal part of her life she said she wanted to inspire people to deal with their problems.

“I remember sitting with my manager and my family and talking to them about whether or not to speak out about the issues I was dealing with,” she told Women’s Health.

“I knew there were two options: I could either not talk about my stint in rehab and hope that it went away, or I could talk about it and inspire people to get help for their issues – so that’s exactly what I did.”
