Cape Town - Jay-Z raised eyebrows by hinting he was unfaithful to Beyoncé after dropping his 4:44 album.

But the Grammy winner (47) had never actually admitted to stepping out on his beautiful wife – until now.

The US rapper has finally admitted to cheating on Beyoncé (36) in a tell-all interview with Dean Baquet from The New York Times

The father of three said he had not dealt with pain from his past, which made him emotionally unavailable and eventually led to the cheating.

“You have to survive. So you go into survival mode, and when you go into survival mode, what happens? You shut down all emotions,” he admitted.

“So, even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can't connect ... In my case, like, it's deep. And then all the things happen from there: Infidelity,” he said.

Beyoncé also touched on his affair in her visual album Lemonade. And while her husband hasn't named the woman he cheated with, Beyoncé called her "Becky with the good hair".

The hip-hop power couple came close to divorce, but therapy saved their nine-year marriage, reports The Sun. Jay and Bey have three children together – Blue Ivy (5) and five-month-old twins Rumi and Sir.

The rapper added that writing about their relationship was not planned, but it ended up being a therapeutic experience for both of them.

“We were using our art almost like a therapy session. And we started making music together.

“And then the music she was making at that time was further along. So her album came out as opposed to the joint album that we were working on.

"We still have a lot of that music. There was never a point where it was like, 'I’m making this album.' I was right there the entire time.”

He added the experience of writing together was “very uncomfortable”.

“The best place is right in the middle of the pain. And that's where we were sitting. And it was uncomfortable. And we had a lot of conversations.

“[I was] really proud of the music she made, and she was really proud of the art I released.

“And, you know, at the end of the day we really have a healthy respect for one another's craft. I think she's amazing.”
