Mariah Carey: Oprah told me to put on my own shoes

Los Angeles - Mariah Carey says Oprah Winfrey once gave her a piece of invaluable career advice – “don't let anybody think that you don't put your own shoes on anymore”.

The Fantasy singer has earned herself a reputation for being a diva over the years and it's a tag she has never sought to play down.

Mariah admits Oprah once took her to one side to tell her there were some things she had to keep doing for herself, and managing her own footwear was one she has tried to stick to - although she claims it's hard when she's wearing extravagant heels.

Speaking in her new E! documentary series Mariah's World, the R&B legend - who is seen having her tootsies laced into a pair of platform heels by an assistant - shared: “Oprah told me, 'Don't let anybody think that you don't put your own shoes on anymore,' and she's really right.

“Problem is some of these shoes are abusive and I can't put them on and I'm not going to lie about it.”

Mariah has given E! cameras unprecedented access to her life for the eight episode series, and the fly-on-the-wall documentary shows her life as a pop star and her with her family, including her five-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe, her children with ex-husband Nick Cannon.

The cameras also captured moments of Mariah's relationship with businessman James Packer and shows her going to a wedding dress fitting, however, the couple's engagement was abruptly called off last month.

The romance looks on shaky ground in the first episode as Mariah makes the decision to postpone the nuptials, originally planned for March, so she can focus on her 27-date, 25 country Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour.

Mariah's World premieres on 11 December at 20:00 on the E! (DStv 124).
