Cape Town - Robbie Williams has spoken in detail for the first time on his petrifying health scare in September which saw him being rushed to hospital.

The UK popstar says doctors found what looked like blood on his brain, forcing him to spend a week in intensive care and cancel his final two European dates on his Heavy Entertainment Show tour.

“I had a headache and I was also having trouble breathing. I couldn’t get a full breath,” the 43-year-old told The Sun before his concert in Zurich, Switzerland, on 2 September. A doctor was called but told the singer he could still perform.

After the show however things went from bad to worse. “My arm was still numb and my mouth was still dribbling,” he recalls. He was immediately flown to London for emergency tests.

“I had blood tests done, and I had various scans including ones of my heart and my brain, and there were some abnormalities found, including something on my brain that looked like blood,” he says.

He was admitted to ICU where he felt “confused and scared”, partly because his family, wife Ayda Field Williams and their kids – daughter Teddy (5) and son Charlie (3) – were all back in the States, Daily Mail reports.

“So she couldn’t see me, and there I was in a little bed, attached to tubes. But in the ICU I was surrounded by people who were caring for me, in every sense of the word, 24 hours a day. I was confused and scared but I knew I was in the right place. And, maybe naively, I felt like I knew I was going to be OK.”

After doctors eventually gave him the all-clear he returned to Los Angeles to spend two months recovering.

The former boy band member, who has struggled with drug abuse in the past, admits the incident has been something of a wake-up call for him, making him realise he is not “invincible” and needs to look after himself.

In a video to his fans back in October he told them he’d suffered a “very worrying ailment” but was on the road to recovery. He also said he’d undergone a major health kick, revealing he’d gone vegan and “does Pilates and yoga every day”.
