WATCH: Jake Gyllenhaal gives heartbreak advice we all need to take

Los Angeles - Jake Gyllenhaal says heartbreak has "shaped" him into who he is.

The Southpaw star thinks it is important to find the positives after a relationship break up.

He told Entertainment Tonight: "Right now we are all in one way or another in different stages experiencing heartbreak of different kinds. Socially, politically, in our own relationships.

"Over time, I think it's always those things that when we face them and we look at them, that make us stronger... Ultimately, you look back and say, not that you're glad for it, but that it shapes you into who you are."

Meanwhile, the 35-year-old actor previously admitted he has always pushed himself as he feels it is part of his "ancestry" to be a hard-working individual.

He shared: "It's part of my ancestry, I think, somewhere. My grandfather on my mother's side was second-generation Jewish American. His father was a tailor from Poland, and he became a surgeon. He was the pride of his family. My father is from a long line of hard-working Swedes.

"Both were men who got up at 4:30 in the morning to start work. Pushing yourself both physically and mentally has always been a part of my life. From an early age, my dad would wake me up early to go for a run."
