10 unforgettable royal moments that happened in 2017

Cape Town – 2017 was filled with royal moments we won’t easily forget.

And between the third royal baby’s arrival in April and the royal wedding in May, 2018 is already looking like another unforgettable year.

But we before we ready ourselves for that, we looked back on the most memorable royal moments this year.

Here are 10 royal moments we won’t forget:

1. Princess Charlotte’s second birthday

Princess Charlotte celebrated her 2nd birthday on Tuesday, 2 May. To mark the special occasion her parents released a special portrait of the forth in line to the throne, taken by Kate herself.

2. Prince Philip announces retirement

Ahead of his 96th birthday in June, Prince Philip formally announced that he would no longer carry out any more public engagements. While he may still make appearances with the Queen here and there, his final scheduled engagement took place in August.

3. Prince William on the cover of British GQ magazine

Prince William, dashing as ever, was the cover star of British GQ’s July issue. The feature highlighted Heads Together - a foundation initiated by himself, Kate and Prince Harry which helps people dealing with mental health issues.

4. Prince William resigns as an air ambulance pilot

July saw Prince William serve his final stint as an air ambulance pilot. It was announced that the British royal would be resigning to take on more extensive royal duties.

5. Remembering Princess Diana

Royal headlines were predominately occupied by the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death. Just one of the ways Princes William and Harry honoured their mother’s memory was by visiting a memorial garden at Kensington Palace and honouring the charity workers who once worked with her.

6. A third royal baby

In September the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge surprised the world with the announcement of a third royal baby. The announcement came after Catherine was forced to pull out of a public engagement due to severe morning sickness. The bundle of joy is due in April.

7. Prince George’s first day of school

Shortly after it was announced that he has another sibling on the way, Prince George started school. Unfortunately, Kate was not able to accompany her toddler to his first day of school however Prince William held his hand all the way to the front door.

8. The Duchess of Cambridge dancing with Paddington Bear

Feeling well enough to make her second appearance since announcing her pregnancy, Kate joined Princes William and Harry as well as the cast of the upcoming Paddington 2 movie for a surprise appearance at Paddington Train Station.

9. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary

The longest reigning monarch and her husband celebrated 70 years of marriage on 20 November, with new portrait of themselves. The portraits – taken by British photographer Matt Holyoak of Camera Press - were taken in early November in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle.

10. A royal engagement

Britain’s royal family ended their year off with the surprise engagement announcement of Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle. The social media announcement was followed by the couple's first official photo-call and TV interview together.
