Cape Town – The British royals stepped out at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday night.

Prince William — the British Academy's president — and the Duchess of Cambridge were guests of honour at Sunday's ceremony, hosted by Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley.

While many actresses opted for monochromatic black as a statement of support for the "Time's Up" movement against sexual harassment and abuse, Kate acknowledged the evening's muted fashion by wearing a dark green Jenny Packham dress with black belt.

The call to wear black put Kate in a delicate position, because the royal family is careful to avoid political statements.

The expectant royal’s choice found a middle way between making a political statement — something the royal family scrupulously avoids — and ignoring the gesture by wearing a bright colour.

Despite Kate’s choice, many took to social media picking at the fact that her dress was not black.

Following her Best Supporting Actress award win, Alison Janey was asked about the royal beauty’s dress.

Without skipping a beat, the I, Tonya actress gave a perfect answer supporting instead of bringing another woman down.

“I would never judge anyone's choice of clothing. She looked absolutely beautiful and I'm so happy for them that she's pregnant again. She's an extraordinary woman. And she can wear whatever she wants.”
