10 Reasons why New Moon is better than Twilight

Email · Print

It's the most anticipated movie of the summer, and whether you're a fan of the teen vampire series or not, there's no way you'll be able to avoid the hype. Here are a few reasons why now is perhaps the time to just give in.

1. Robert Pattinson. Topless.
Officially the Sexiest Man Alive (depending on who you ask), the breakout star of The Twilight Saga is all about the broodiness in Stephenie Meyer's vampires-for-teenagers universe. And he lives in the woods. So we saw a little too much of his GQ-meets-lumberjack wardrobe. But it all comes off in a pivotal scene in New Moon. Ladies, your prayers have been answered.

2. That soundtrack
The Twilight soundtrack was fun, if a little dusty. Collective Soul? Really? But New Moon has attracted the kind of talent not easily associated with the vampire franchise. With new songs from Death Cab for Cutie, The Killers, Bon Iver and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, we have to admit that the movie probably doesn’t deserve such an awesome soundtrack. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

3. A director who understands teenagers
Director Catherine Hardwicke can't really be faulted for all of Twilight's missteps, and she did emerge relatively unscathed from that whole experience. See how mass teenage approval can snuff out critical indifference and thousands of Twilight spoofs? Chris Weitz comes on board as the saviour of teen movies (he's teh brains behind the American Pie movies, and directed About A Boy).  He totally understands the angst and the funny side of being a messed up kid.

4. A cast with clout

K.Stew and R.Pattz steered the ship in the first movie, but their performances were relatively secondary to their looks. New Moon has really upped the acting stakes with the addition of Dakota Fanning, Michael Sheen and rising star Jamie Campbell Bower as members of the vampire royal family, the Volturi. Look out for Bower in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows two-part finale.

5. Bigger budget = better SFX
One major problem I had with Twilight was the scrappy look of the special effects and the general "on a tight budget" feel about the movie. Edward's gosh-wow vampire skills came off more campy than bad-ass. So it comes as a massive relief to learn that Summit Entertainment are dishing out $20-30million more for this one. And they certainly have the moolah to make things happen after their 23 000% profit margin post-Twilight.

6. There's a plot that actually moves
Free from the shackles of the origins story we saw in the first movie, New Moon promises a whole whack of new tensions. Edward realises the danger he and his family pose to Bella (because they really, really want to eat her), leaving Bella to contend with the villainous Victoria, while Jacob starts to make his move. And based on the trailer, the action has also been amplified with the introduction of the werewolf clan.

7. Taylor Lautner alert!
We predict that you all are going to get over Robert Pattinson pretty soon. It's bound to happen. However, the franchise still cashes in with our attention turned to 17-year-old Taylor Lautner as Jacob, who has gone through an incredible metamorphosis over the last year to play a more commanding role in New Moon (and in Bella's life).

8. They’ve learnt from their mistakes
It's the sign of a growing franchise to take each new project as a learning curve, and while it's a bit early to call New Moon an artistic success (art matters, kids!), the hard-line decisions that have been taken thus far are encouraging signs. The producers have opted for a revolving door policy regarding directors (David Slade is behind the lens for Eclipse), fired star players (Rachelle Lefevre was unceremoniously dumped for Bryce Dallas Howard to play the role of Victoria) and know that their core audience of 12-year-old girls will (hopefully) mature as the Saga continues.

9. It's actually scary this time
Let's be honest: Twilight was about as frightening as discovering a fly in your soup. And we're a little uncertain about the genre we're talking about here anyway. Romance? Science fiction? Fantasy? Horror seems a mighty stretch. But things in New Moon take a darker turn with the introduction of the Volturi, who actually feed on human blood and possess insane levels of strength, agility and speed, as well as growing danger surrounding Bella who has been abandoned by her posse of Cullens.

10. Real vampires behaving like... vampires
Gap-wearing, vegetarian vampires are not really going to bring the horror, so thank heavens for the Volturi and the mad world which they rule. With their fiery red eyes, intimidating black cloaks and super-powers, their supremacy over the vampire world is undeniable. And it will be great to see vampires who actually behave like they're supposed to. Badly.

True Blood is okay, but it's not as strong as Twilight in the emotional sphere. Men shouldn't think women are like them. I much more prefer Twilight to any True Blood. True Blood is like Twinpeaks: it's interesting to look once, but not more. The Moonlight -series was also good: too bad critics were so boring and helped to stop the series. Twilight is for women, not men. Even though New Moon might have all the parts of the book, it doesn't 'take me there' emotionally, like Catherine's piece of art. She knew how to create intimacy with the hand camera etc. Too bad people prefer Disney Clean products. I watched twilight 20 times, but New Moon only 4. >It tells something. I was sucked in to Twilight, but New Moon is too sterile. I don't like the 50's American cowboy movie feel to it.

Team Edward " He's like my own personal brand of heroin"
Jill 11/24/2009 9:50 AM
saw the movie yesterday. Edward is a weakling compared to Jacob. Jacob isn't a boy anymore......he's so hot.

People get really worked up over entertainment, Rice is awsome. Meyer is an obsession. both r v appealing!

If you haven't read all books and watched both movies you can't really judge the Twilight series. When there's so much hype over something it's usually for a reason. So read all the books, see Twilight & New Moon and judge them afterwards.

I saw this movie on Friday and it's much better than Twilight. It has just the right amount of action, drama, comedy and romance. The bigger budget is evident as well as the new directing. For fans of the books, it sticks to the book a lot more than Twilight did and included all the important scenes. I was most impressed by Taylor Lautner's acting (even more than his torso). He plays Jacob perfectly and really stands out above everyone else in this film. Definitely worth seeing, even guys will enjoy this one.

I agree that the movie/s have a "cute" factor, but the author has not stayed true to the "Vampire Ideology" I agree with Dracolusus, a glow in the day vampire? She's effing up the genre!
Milly 11/22/2009 4:54 PM
jules- if you only read a bit of the books you can't actually judge them can you??? I agree with Keenan, if your not fans of the Twilight Saga don't post comments. Twilght forever!!!!!!!!
jules 11/21/2009 2:51 PM
I can't speak for the quality of the movies, but I read a bit from the book and WOW it is written for MORONS! Such simple English, I don't understand how anyone above the age of 14 can actually like the novels
Dracolusus 11/20/2009 4:29 PM
And just FYI, I clicked on the link, cause the headline made me LMFAO, since I know the second is going to be more weak and pathetic than the first!
Dracolusus 11/20/2009 4:26 PM
The saddest Vampire movie of all time. I think Fright Night was better. Yes I know, its a romance and all that, but why couldn't they have used something else, instead of stuffing up the Vampire Genre for the rest of us. A glow in the day Vampire, I mean please...
Keenan 11/20/2009 3:31 PM
hahahaha... good point Lydon.. I missed that one.
Megan 11/20/2009 3:21 PM
To all of those who say Twilight is "crap" - well i think deep down you love it just as much as the rest of us - why else would you have click on the link to read this article if it is truly something you dislike !
Lydon 11/20/2009 3:19 PM
Mel, how can you think both movies are pathetic if the second one isn't out yet?...
Keenan 11/20/2009 3:16 PM
Great minds think alike, Megan! I got my tickets the other day! LOL... @ all the haters who 'love' Anne Rice, why don't you go put something supportive on her site... this one is dedicated to Twilight/New Moon (and Robert ofcause)!!! :)
Mel 11/20/2009 1:36 PM
Uurgh, i think both movies are pathetic, I prefer The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, now that's something worth sinking ya teeth into~~
Anne Rice >>>>>>> Twitlight 11/20/2009 1:22 PM
Maybe one of you girls who are so excited by this pile of crap can give my money back from the last one. I should have gone to see Madagascar instead.
Agatha 11/20/2009 12:43 PM
LOL...not sure about the whole teen thing :-) I am 40 and have read all the novels and LOVED it...cannot wait for New Moon...the books are so good though, scared I'll be disappointed... This 'old woman' also thinks Robert is 'to die for' :-)
Rapunzell 11/20/2009 11:22 AM
I have tickets for the midnight showing of New Moon tonight... it has been my motivation for the past few weeks ... keeping me sane as the year comes to an end... Cant wait!
AW 11/20/2009 10:31 AM
I am a big fan of Anne Rice but Robert is too delicious to ignore
Megan 11/20/2009 10:13 AM
I have my tickets booked for the 27th already. Keenan - i tried so hard, but i couldn't resist, i have just finish the whole series (novels) They are fantastic - Breaking Dawn is my fav
Keenan 11/20/2009 8:58 AM
OMW... for all those Taylor fans.. ok, i'll give you this: his cute.. but that's about it... Robert however... wow. Yes... I'm a guy. I've just now reread the Twilight, just to recap (the novel). I was re-enchanted by the tension, romance, and drama of it all.. I've put off reading new moon until the movie.. but now I can hardly blood wait! JK, I know True Blood, no comparison. Twilight and it's Saga wins hands down! Megan, Bianca and Carol... I hope you guys ENJOY the new movie (I know I will)!!! Anti-sparkle... get a life... Cheers! ;)
Anti-sparkle 11/20/2009 7:34 AM
You know, I'd make a list of ten reasons I don't give a damn, but that means I'd have to spend time on something as ridiculous as the Twilight Soap saga. I'm with you on this JK.
Hot for Jacob 11/19/2009 4:12 PM
Sorry Bianca, my money's on Taylor. He is one of the hottest guys ever!
Carol 11/19/2009 3:52 PM
1 day 8 hours and 3 minutes to New Moon! Taylor is a boy, Robert is a man! Team Edward is alive and well!
JK 11/19/2009 3:24 PM
This whole Twilight thing is embarrassingly over the top. You girls ever heard of True Blood? Anne Rice?
Bianca 11/19/2009 3:01 PM
I agree with Megan only teenage, no way! And Robert Pattinson will always stay the sexiest man on earth! Stuff Jacob!!!
Megan 11/19/2009 2:50 PM
