Aliens in Africa

Produced by Peter Jackson and shot in SA, District 9 is a sci-fi movie event that has been shrouded under a veil of secrecy. Well, no more.
District 9

A sci-fi movie about an alien landing that doesn't occur in the US, but rather in a South African township? If this wasn't reason enough to make you deliriously excited about District 9, set to, er, invade our shores on 28 August 2009, consider this:

-    District 9 was written and directed by South African film maverick Niell Blomkamp, who has previously worked on the science fiction TV shows Smallville and Dark Angel (for which he received an Emmy nomination). Blomkamp also created the popular Halo live action shorts, which can be viewed on YouTube.

-    The movie is produced by Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

-    Jackson and his protegé Blomkamp had originally planned to film an epic, big budget film version of the video game Halo, but decided to tackle District 9 independently after failing to secure the necessary funding.

-    The promotional campaign for District 9, which has been months in the works, is unique, having gone viral with cryptic posters first appearing at the popular ComicCon in San Diego, California, in 2008, as well as bus shelters, shop windows and park benches. The posters didn't carry much information, except a web address – D-9.com

-    The movie is based on the short independent movie by Blomkamp called Alive in Joburg. Watch it here.

-     It tells of an alien landing in a Johannesburg township, where the new invaders are treated with suspicion and segregated from the general population.

-    The official District 9 website is 'run' by the fictitious Multinational United (MNU) who are responsible for maintaining order between humans and 'non-humans'.

-    The movie is said to be shot in a gritty documantary style – setting itself apart from many blockbuster 'alien' movies and comic book adaptations which have dominated the box office. "It's original, which is a good thing, because the film industry only wants to remake every 70s TV show and superhero graphic novel. District 9 is not your typical summer film," Peter Jackson recently told Rolling Stone.

District 9 official synopsis:

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them.

Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare – they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens’ awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA.

The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable – he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracised and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

* On a scale of 10 to 10, how pumped are you for the District 9? Could this be the movie that places SA science fiction and technical invention on the map? And will the movie's impressive viral campaign prove to be its most inspired move? All will be revealed on 28 August. It's closer than you think.
