Charlize Theron's next move

South Africa's golden girl, Charlize Theron, hasn’t graced our screens for some time now. Her last major role was as the nameless 'Woman' opposite Viggo Mortensen in The Road, a post-apocalyptic movie that didn’t really break out of its indie inclinations.

To be truthful, we've become a little bit bored by Charlize's more recent roles. In The Burning Plain she played a sexually promiscuous woman hiding behind a painful past. Which was eerily similar to the damaged soul she played in Sleepwalking and, of course, the role that won her an Oscar in 2004, as serial killer Aileen Wournos in Monster.

While Charlize has hardly been what you'd call a big box office drawcard in the way that Cameron Diaz or Angelina Jolie are, that's all about to change if the latest rumours about her upcoming projects are anything to go by.

Batman and Snow White

There are some very loud whispers about who will be the leading lady in Christopher Nolan's next Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, now that Rachel Dawes is pretty much out of the picture. Word is that The Dark Knight Rises will in fact feature two leading female roles, with Charlize linked to the role of Sarah Essen, a detective and prospective partner for Gotham City's top cop Jim Gordon (played by Gary Oldman). The other is Julie Madison, a prospective love interest for Bruce Wayne himself, with Up in the Air star Vera Farmiga strongly linked to the role.

These details are still, er, up in the air, but for the moment Charlize is most likely to play The Wicked Queen in a big-budget retelling of the Snow White fairytale, Snow White and the Huntsman. Johnny Depp has already been offered the role of the huntsman, which is giving us flashbacks of Alice in Wonderland to be honest, but, no, this isn't a Tim Burton project. It's being directed by newcomer Rupert Sanders and is set for release in December 2012.

But that's not the only high profile role Charlize has lined up. It seems that the world, or rather Hollywood screenwriters, are still fascinated by the late Princess Diana and have a movie planned that focuses on Diana's relationship with her former bodyguard Ken Wharfe. Charlize is being eyed for the role of the tragic princess, with Ewan McGregor as the bodyguard whose controversial book, Diana: Closely Guarded Secret, is to be adapted for the movie.

Could this be Charlize's next Oscar-winning role? Portraying royalty certainly didn’t hurt Helen Mirren, but even if she never wins another award again, Charlize is in need of a memorable, statement-making role asap.

Which movie do you think is the one that's going to put her back on the map? Princess Diana, Snow White's evil queen? Or in The Dark Knight Rises, possibly the most anticipated movie currently in development?

Let's help Charlize make her decision!
