The first Winnie trailer has hit the web. The movie, directed by Darrell Roodt, tells the story of South African struggle veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's rural origins, her romance and eventual marriage to activist Nelson Mandela (played by Terrence Howard), who was sentenced to life in prison by the apartheid government in 1964, and her rise to prominence throughout the liberation struggle.

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson stars as Winnie Mandela and the casting of two American stars in the movie has raised protests from acclaimed South African actors such as John Kani and the Creative Workers Union of South Africa, which supported Madikizela-Mandela's own attempts to have production of the film called off.
"Every time there is a movie that tells a South African story, it is done by someone who must be taught the right way of pronouncing Sawubona. Enough is enough," said Kani, when details of the film's casting first came to light.
Madikizela-Mandela also threatened legal action against Roodt as she was not consulted on the contents of the film.
Winnie is based on Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob's biography, Winnie Mandela: A Life and is expected to be released in 2011.
*When news of the Winnie casting broke, we asked, Winnie: Who Should Play Her?
Now that you've seen Hudson in action in the role, what do you think? Does she pull it off?
