Frankenstein on the big screen

Oscar winning director Danny Boyle (127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire) returns to the theatre to direct this visionary new production, Frankenstein by Nick Dear, based on the novel by Mary Shelley.

For the first time ever, National Theatre Live will broadcast two separate performances of a production. Throughout the sold-out run of Frankenstein at the National Theatre, Benedict Cumberbatch (Atonement, Sherlock) and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, Eli Stone) are alternating the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature. Audiences in cinemas will have the chance to see both combinations, with two broadcasts a week apart.

Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein's bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.

The production has been receiving rave reviews in the UK:

"The Frankenstein story has become so familiar that it might seem an impossible task to make the old story seem fresh. Yet somehow Boyle does just that, constantly creating shocks, spectacular coups de theatre and scenes that tug at the heart."
- Charles Spencer, Daily Telegraph

"The actors complement each other perfectly rather than provide a contest and Boyle's production is a bravura triumph."
- Michael Billington, The Guardian

"It is a hell of a production. This taut, thrilling play runs to its awful conclusion without an interval, indeed with hardly a moment for breath."
- Libby Purves, The Times

Frankenstein will be screened at selected Ster Kinekor Nouveau for four shows only:

Sunday 10 April – 14.30
