THE HEALING PROCESS

Country of My Skull / In my Country (2004)

Director:
John Boorman
Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Juliette Binoche, Brendan Gleeson, Menzi Ngubane, Sam Ngakane, Aletta Bezuidenhout, Lionel Newton

The movie is a dramatisation of Antjie Krog's account of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, published as Country of My Skull. French actress Binoche plays an Afrikaner poet who gets romantically involved with an American Journalist (Jackson) who is sent to South Africa to cover the TRC. While the movie was not a critical success, it offered an affecting perspective on SA post-apartheid and the significant hand the Commission played in helping the country heal from a long period of hurt.
