Intense, focused, tall, dark and handsome – New Zealand actor Karl Urban is a presence that’s impossible to miss.

Best known for supporting roles in massive big screen blockbusters such as The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Supremacy, Red and Star Trek, Karl now gets his chance to stand out as the lead in the new action-packed, post-apocalyptic remake Dredd 3D, released SA cinemas on 28 September.

Dredd 3D is a British-South African co-production that was filmed entirely in South Africa – and was the first major production to shoot at the massive Cape Town Film Studios.

Karl had nothing but praise for the local film crew and shared his hopes for returning to South Africa for a Dredd 3D sequel.

The movie also stars Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson - a rookie with special abilities, Lena Headey as the big bad guy, and a number of South African actors such as Jason Cope, Warrick Grier, Junior Singo and Langley Kirkwood.

It is a dark, gritty, thrilling and unrelenting epic that should erase any lingering memories of the comical Sylvester Stallone movie Judge Dredd released in 1995. This Judge Dredd means business.

Karl spent four months in Cape Town making Dredd and returned to the city for the movie’s South African release. We sat down with him to see how well he knows Cape Town and the avowed All Blacks supporter even had some advice for the struggling Springboks!
